Lighthouses in Hampshire are featured in a captivating book about the top 100 lighthouses of Britain.

Penned by award-winning author Roger O'Reilly, the book Legendary Lighthouses of Britain is narrated and illustrated with retro art.

The book takes the reader on a journey to some of Britain's most famous lighthouses, from the Lizard in Cornwall to Muckle Flugga at the northern tip of the Shetlands.

Each lighthouse has narratives of endurance, shipwrecks, sea legends, and ghost stories.

This includes Souter on the Sunderland coast, reputed to be haunted by the niece of Grace Darling, Isabella, who lived there in the late 1880s.

Another notable lighthouse featured is Ardnamurchan in the far west of Scotland, so remote that the builders fell ill with scurvy, and fresh food along with medical assistance had to be dispatched to them.

Urban explorers will find interest in the Trinity Buoy Wharf, a lighthouse in the heart of London, currently housing the Longplayer, a continuous 1,000-year long piece of music set to run until the end of 2999.

The book also highlights the Lundy South lighthouse, notorious for its history as an 18th century base for Devon's infamous smuggler Thomas Benson, and also its 17th century occupation by Barbary pirates.

Mr O'Reilly's home connection to the Boyne Estuary lighthouse in County Meath fuelled his fascination with lighthouses.

Besides creating the illustrations, he has also penned engaging text full of historical details, enriching it further with thrilling stories of survival amid nature's mighty power.

Legendary Lighthouses of Britain stands out in its appealing package of 100 retro travel poster-styled lighthouse portraits.
