Hampshire County Council has said that the end is in sight for the closure of Charles Watts Way.

The closure of the A334 has caused long delays and congestion for those wanting to travel from Junction 7 of the M27 into Southampton.

Charles Watts Way was originally closed in November of 2023 due to a landslip at the side of the road.

The work was due to be done by around mid-February, but was extended until June.

The authority said the reason for the extension was because the "damage to the embankment is more severe than originally identified."

However, the council has now set a date for when the barriers will be lifted and the eastbound lane re-opened. 

From Friday, June 7, drivers will be able to travel up the eastbound lane of the A334, with the council saying the repair work is now drawing to a close.

A Hampshire County Council spokesperson said: “The extension to the emergency works to repair the landslip on A334 Charles Watts Way was due to the extent of the landslip being worse than initially anticipated, therefore more time has been needed to address the problem.

"These works are now nearing completion and a return to two-way running on the A334 is planned for Friday 7 June.

"In the meantime, the eastbound lane will remain closed.

"The road will be closed from 7.30pm Thursday, June 6, to 6am Friday, June 7, to remove the temporary barriers and restore the original road markings. A signed diversion will be in place.”

Traffic issues have been made worse by the resurfacing work on the M27 that has seen drivers stuck at 50 miles per hour from junction 8, Hedge End, to junction 5, Eastleigh. 

Also adding to the delays around the Hedge End and Thornhill areas was that road works have also sprung up on Kanes Hill - also adding to congestion near to Charles Watts Way.
