Car fire causing severe delays on M27 near Eastleigh

A car has caught fire on the M27 and is causing long delays.

Two lanes are closed due to the fire on the M27 Eastbound at Junction 5.

Congestion to surrounding routes, including Stoneham Way and Bassett Avenue.

The road was closed for about 25 minutes before 4.55pm.

The fire has reportedly been extinguished, but long delays are still occurring.

Inspections are underway to assess the road surface and the bridge where the fire happened.

One driver said she was stopped on the motorway at the junction next to Southampton Airport and was ten cars back from the fire.

She said: “Firefighters are here putting the car out.”

She was stopped on the carriageway for 15 minutes with all the lanes closed, but the emergency service managed to open two out of the three lanes, which got traffic moving again.

She added: “The firefighters at the scene have done a really good job and the road has opened far more quickly than I was expecting.”
