SAILORS are used to battling the elements at sea but now bad weather has sunk plans for a fundraising event on land.
The Deloitte and Sailors’ Society Cycle has been pushed back seven months as the organisers feared severe wind and rain could make the activity dangerous.
They say this decision was taken in light of recent spells of bad weather and the forecasts for October.
The event, to raise money for Southampton-based charity the Sailors’ Society, was due to take place on October 5 this year but has been postponed until May 10 next year.
Organisers say when it does take place the event will be bigger and better and they believe Southampton wants a big charity event in the city in the spring.
The organisers apologise to the public and said they hope everyone who planned to take part will mark it in their diaries for next year.
A society spokesman said: “With four different cycle routes of varying lengths and difficulty and a great selection of entertainment and local food at Mayflower Park, the Deloitte and Sailors’ Society Cycle provides an excellent day out for all the family, friends or office colleagues.”
“The organisers wish to extend a big thank you to all who have so enthusiastically pledged their support of the Deloitte and Sailors’ Society Cycle.”
Through a network of port chaplains and seafarers’ centres the society provides emotional support and help to seafarers.
