Reckless motorcyclist's 82mph wheelie on city street

4:10pm Tuesday 30th September 2008

comment Comments (63)   Have your say »

A MOTORCYCLIST was caught doing a wheelie at almost three times the 30mph speed limit.

Steven Wayne Skilton yesterday admitted to breaking the limit seven times.

Speed cameras caught the 22-year-old on Northam Bridge and Maybray King Road, doing speeds of up to 88 miles-per-hour.

He was caught on camera on Northam Bridge doing a wheelie on his bike at a speed of 82mph.

Of the seven times he admitted to, Skilton was doing speeds of 88, 82, 77, 72, 54, 58 and 83 miles per hour on his Kawasaki ZX10R.

All the offences occured between April 25 and May 23 this year.

Recognition experts identified Skilton, who lives in Ellis Road, Bitterne.

He was disqualified from driving for 18 months and had 39 points placed on his licence at Southampton magistrates’ court.

He was also fined £600 and was required to pay £70 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

The magistrate said the speeds were so fast that in 15 years he had never come across such a case before.

Julian Hewitt, spokesperson for the Safer Roads Partnership, said: “Riding at these speeds in an urban area is extremely dangerous. Doing a wheelie compounds the danger because it would reduce steering and braking capacity causing the rider not to be in proper control of his vehicle.

This case should send out a clear message that such reckless riding will not be tolerated. The Partnership has experienced intelligence and motorcycle experts who will identify and prosecute riders who endanger the public by acting irresponsibly.”

As a biker of many years, I am appalled this idiot was only given an 18month ban. I filter thru stationary traffic whether on a motorway or urban roads, this is not illegal and as has been pointed out earlier cuts down congestion and is enviromentally friendly, the weaving when filtering is down to 'some' jealous idiots in their cars trying to block our progress.
I hope this idiot motorcyclist gets what he deserves for allowing his behaviour to fuel the anti motorcycle brigades hatred.

It seems everyone is taking the opportunity to take a pop at motor cyclists in general. Yes, some of it is justified. However, as a car driver myself, it is my observation that there are idiots who drive cars as well as motor cycles, equally there are idiots who should not be in charge of a pair of feet, even though they are apparently restricted to the pavement. This rider is a fool, and a fool that got caught. Fortunately he did not apparently cause any accidents despite the speed, and I suspect he was punished more for his cocking a snoot at the law than the actual offences.

But please do not typify has behaviour as that of motor cyclists in general, and let's have a bit of balance about the stupid behaviour of motorists as well!

Snail Pace, Hill Head says...
2:23pm Tue 30 Sep 08

Think about what car drivers do too, fair enough he was daft doing a wheelie at speed in a built up area and he got caught so be it. but how many times have you sat in your cars and been over taken by a bike and been made to swerve? Now think about how many times you have been in your car and been over taken by a car then cut up. Or how many cars have you been sat behind in the "fast" lane of a motorway when other is nothing in the other lanes? How many people are killed by cars compared to bike? there are idiots in cars and on bikes but as most car drivers have nothing better to do while they are sat in there cars adding to the global warming creating congestion they see a motorbike nip by, in most cases safely and in accordance to law they moan as the biker will be home before them. So before you judge a biker for passing you think about all the tit's driving cars how don't have a clue or any road scene.

lol, my original post was a slightly cynical swipe at the holier than thou motorcyclists. We have seen so many deaths and accidents recently and as I have said before, driving down the A326 daily, I STILL see more bikers taking unnecessary risks than I do car drivers.

Before you all come out with it, no I don't mean safely overtaking slow moving traffic. That doesn't bother me at all.

I mean overtaking flowing traffic at high speeds due to your impatience, I mean overtaking and never bothering to signal (no wonder so many car drivers collide with you) and I mean going WELL above the speed limit.

I see it every day so it is so funny that you are all claiming to be perfect.

I know there are bad motorists and bad motorcyclists, just strange that there never seem to be any two wheeler's willing to admit they take the odd unnecessary risk.

Drive safely ladies and gents. One death is TOO many

On a lot of motorcycles, only 1 front light is illuminated when on dipped beam, the other will be main beam, which would be irresponsible to use in the conditions.

Neither of the other two motorcycles are riding irresponsibly from what I can see on the picture. As my knowledge of UK road law HAS to be up to date as part of my job, you are just showing yourself to be an ignorant numpty with outdated knowledge of the UK road laws. May I suggest you read the new edition of the highway code, Pay particular attention to rules 160-172. And the other who have complained about motorcyclists filtering through slow moving traffic, get the new highway code and read rule 168. When car drivers move over to try to hinder the progress of a filtering motorcyclist, THEY are breaking the law and will certainly get a tug from me or my colegues.

Yes the guy doing the wheelie is an idiot, and if it were up to me would never have his license returned to him, but I meet car drivers every day who should not be on the road, mostly due to attitudes towards other road users.

Indeed point 88 in the highway code seems to suggest that filtering is perfectly legal.

Personally I dont see a problem with it as long as they look out for the obvious dangers and keep to the law (which I'd say the vast majority do)

It does seem to me, however, that car drivers are more likely to break the rules or the law as they are more heavily protected and feel safer doing it

Not saying what this guy was doing was correct as its far from it but it is clear you do not ride a bike as if you did your comment about road position of the 2nd and 3rd bike would not need to be explained. this use of the road is part or rider safety, placing yourself in the cars mirrors so they do not pull out on you if they actually check there mirrors, the 3rd guy is placed so he can see passed both bikes this also increases the distance between all motorcyclists. so might be worth you learning about road safety before you make comments that you don't know about.

As a long standing car driver, motorcycle pillion and learner rider, I've seen it all from all angles. I agree totally that there are good and bad bikers and drivers alike, and I'm afraid some cyclists aren't perfect either (run me over on the pavement why don't you!)But hysterical demands to ban all bikes - who pay road tax, by the way - are ridiclous and counter-productive. This is a free country, we have as much right to be on the road as anyone else. This rider is an utter disgrace to motorcycling who is only fuelling the anti-bike lobby with his selfish dieregard for other road users and pedestrians, and no law-abiding biker would want to be associated with him, but please don't tar us all with the same brush. By the way, I challenge anyone who thinks we're all lawless lunatics to spend some time as a pillion - a guaranteed eye-opener. It's amazing how many drivers don't see you while they continue using their mobile phones illegally whilst driving. And whatever you think about us always blaming others for accidents - sometimes we are at fault, but we will always be more vulnerable on 2 wheels where many of those cocooned in 4 wheels with endless airbags simply don't pay enough attention.

"This country needs more people like him proving that perfectly good dual carriage ways in dry good visability are given crazy 30 mile an hour speed limits"

Er... we are talking Northam Bridge - not some remote countryside stretch of tempting road that can be used for this kind of 'fun'

The speeds and circus antics of this wannabe Eddie Kidd could have resulted in grim headlines that we would all be talking about.

Plus loads of 'sympathy' messages from complete strangers and the inevitable mawkish 'Diana' syndrome that sees loads of people leaving flowers, messages, toys etc in 'memory' of another loss of life.

Most bikers are sensible and enjoy the odd thrill and adrenaline rush that goes with it all. They are also well aware that their luck might run out one day - trouble is - they might take innocent lives with them.

I dont think that the labels of 'reckless' or 'stupid' apply in this case as mentioned above - maybe just gross irresponsibility and selfish?

I went out and passed my bike test because i used to sit in traffic and envy the motorcyclists who would clearly get to their destination before me. Ocean if there were more motorbikes on the road congestion would improve. Next time you see a motorbike weaving through the traffic just think that is one less car sat in front of you. Most car drivers are courteous and leave room for riders to get through, occasionally you have a jealous driver who makes life difficult and causes riders to swerve. I am guessing this is prob you Ocean. Get out of your warm cozy car and do your bit for congestion and the environment and get a motorbike. If you do not have the skills factor for this for a try a bicycle.

like to remind 2WheelCop, Worcester that's still an offence to under take,
the only times when you can under take is at right turning junction, weaving or filtering in and out of traffic may legal but it still has to be done on the out side of traffic even when it has stop.you can pass between 2 lanes of traffic that has stop, providing it is clear enough to do so, but you cant cross over the white seperation lane lines if you do so then its classed has under taking,if there not enough room for a bike to pass though with out crossing the lines and he carrys on then he has broken another law enter an area of road thats not clear, the law was only change for none motorize vechiles they are now allowed to under take.
looking at the picture i am surprise that he never got done for not having full controll of his bike, doing wheelies on british high ways is an offence.

Nicely put spudnik & Jerry. Back in the day when I learnt to drive, the one thing continually hammered home was "consideration for other road users." I wonder if it still is ?? Answers on a postcard please !

Undertaking is NOT against the law, however the police can do you for careless driving if they catch you doing it, if they think you are being a prat about it.

If you view his facebook profile, he almost seems proud.
His picture the one of him above and some of his comments are as follows

"haha legend !!!! gonna put u forward for local hero!!"

"kawasaki ninja = £4000
Full leathers = £300
Tank of gas = £20
Getting caught on speed camera pulling weelie at 88Mph = PRICELESS''

''you badass steveo!! f*****g legend!! thats awesome! haha''

Some people really dont understand the rules of the road, and the rules of being a decent human!
