A MOTORCYCLIST was caught doing a wheelie at almost three times the 30mph speed limit.

Steven Wayne Skilton yesterday admitted to breaking the limit seven times.

Speed cameras caught the 22-year-old on Northam Bridge and Maybray King Road, doing speeds of up to 88 miles-per-hour.

He was caught on camera on Northam Bridge doing a wheelie on his bike at a speed of 82mph.

Of the seven times he admitted to, Skilton was doing speeds of 88, 82, 77, 72, 54, 58 and 83 miles per hour on his Kawasaki ZX10R.

All the offences occured between April 25 and May 23 this year.

Recognition experts identified Skilton, who lives in Ellis Road, Bitterne.

He was disqualified from driving for 18 months and had 39 points placed on his licence at Southampton magistrates’ court.

He was also fined £600 and was required to pay £70 costs and a £15 victim surcharge.

The magistrate said the speeds were so fast that in 15 years he had never come across such a case before.

Julian Hewitt, spokesperson for the Safer Roads Partnership, said: “Riding at these speeds in an urban area is extremely dangerous. Doing a wheelie compounds the danger because it would reduce steering and braking capacity causing the rider not to be in proper control of his vehicle.

This case should send out a clear message that such reckless riding will not be tolerated. The Partnership has experienced intelligence and motorcycle experts who will identify and prosecute riders who endanger the public by acting irresponsibly.”
