IF you are looking for things to do this month that will not cost you a penny why not take some inspiration from Southampton’s programme of events to mark Black History Month.

The annual event is designed to celebrate the historical and social impact of black people in Southampton past and present.

A FREE exhibition entitled The Windrush... and Beyond is on display at Southampton Solent University’s Michael Andrews Building in East Park Terrace, Southampton, from October 13 until October 24.

The collection of photographs tells the story of the people from the Caribbean who came to start a new life in England in 1948.

The African Caribbean Federation will be holding a FREE Caribbean open day at Mount Pleasant School in Southampton on Saturday from midday until 5pm.

Attractions will include black history exhibitions, Caribbean food, a steel band and other Caribbean music and a slide show.

Cuban artist Lester Eloy McCollin Springer is exhibiting his work inspired by African people at the Spice Art Studios Gallery, 16 Manor Farm Road, Bitterne Park, Southampton. The gallery is open Tuesday to Saturday from 10amuntil 6pm.

There will also be a free Back to Black fashion show to mark Black History Month on October 27 at Southampton Solent University’s Sir James Matthews Building in Above Bar Street, Southampton.
