A MOTORIST has been arrested after an accident left a cyclist fighting for his life and caused traffic misery for commuters this morning.

The collision was between a bike and an Orange Fiat Punto and it happened opposite the Millbrook Star filling station shortly after 7.20am.

The 27-year-old cyclist suffered serious head injuries and he was rushed to Southampton General Hospital by ambulance with a police escort.

He has since been transferred to the neurological intensive care unit at the hospital.

The 29-year-old female motorist has been arrested on suspicion of inflicting GBH. She was uninjured in the collision.

Both the cyclist and the motorist are from Southampton.

The inbound carriageways Millbrook Road West and Terbourba Way reopened shortly after 11am this morning, after being closed since just before 7.30am.

Traffic had been queuing back to the motorway causing huge problems for commuters throughout the morning.

I passed this accident from Regents Park Road just as the ambulance staff were treating the cyclist - I have to say he looked in a bad way - so thoughts go out to him.

The car was in a bit of a mess with the windscreen smashed - when I passed the young female driver was looking very distraught and being comforted by a policewoman.

Whatever the circumstances - which no doubt plenty of people will speculate about - I hope all involved recover.

Yes it was right at the Regents Park Road traffic lights on the triple carriageway heading into town. The Texaco garage is of course on the other side of the road heading out of the town!!

Nope, he'll mean Star, as that is what Texaco call all their petrol stations.

And before you make-up some long diatribe about why I'm wrong, I used to work there when I was a student years ago.

"suspicion of inflicting GBH"

Isn't that unusual for an RTA?

but its not been owned by texaco for a few years,

anyway as the the gbh charge it is a bit strange why not driving without due care or attention

or is there more to this story than what they are letting on (but if the driver is as upset as the echo says then proberly not)

it does seem a strange excuse for nicking her

Very unusual - it'd normally be "suspician of careless driving/dangerous driving/DUI" etc
Unless she had an accident, cyclist was OK, then she attacked him/her?
Pure speculation before anyone leaps in!

Not jumping on your back.

However I often have to cycle over that junction (8 lanes with the turn lanes) to get to the cycle lane which then goes West towards Totton. Cycling over that distance can mean the lights have changed before you can fully cross. Could be as simple as that.

I agree - Millbrook road is too busy for cyclists and unnecessary too; I used to cycle it's length everyday (Totton-S'oton) quite safely down the industrial estate side, and it frightened me seeing cyclists on it - it is simply too busy at rush hour; cyclists do have the right but good sense should warn not to.
Fingers crossed the guy recovers.

The driver will have been arrested for GBH as that is the substantive suspected offence (owing to the injuries caused to the cyclist as a result of the RTI), any other charge of careless or dangerous driving will simply be added on if evidenced enough by witnesses etc. Although it does seem slightly strange that someone is arrested for GBH as a result of an RTI, the fact that the motor vehicle is the 'instrument' of the assault does not negate it from still being an assault. Hope this clears that one up.

Never.

Could it have been less of an accident and more of a purposeful act of violence against the cyclist?, R.R and not an R.T.I, and how anal of you lot to be nit-picking over the correct name of the garage, anoraks.

What on earth are you talking about OV? Honestly, sometimes I wonder about you...

..anyway, my thoughts go out to the cyclist. I know that even a slow collision hurts like hell (its been a few weeks since mine and I still ache) and I hope he gets well soon!

i know your not,
i do agree and you are proberly right as i have seen many a car not make it across

but that junction or road is really not designed for cyclists. maybe it neads a little money spent and a better cycle path and signage installed (presuming that the cyclist was not at fault)

It was a cyclist involved not a motorbike. & if you read it, it says the car driver was arrested after the accident. Unfortunately with most accidents involving bikes the cause is the carelessness of the car driver.

My thoughts exactly. That implies some intent, for starters, in which case, wouldn't the charge be "attempted murder with a motor vehicle" or whatever the recently-introduced new crime was?

Does this person have any compassion? People make mistakes and accidents happen, this is a sad time for ALL involved and surely the young lady is suffering enough without adding to her misery by making such cruel comments.

What jokes? I can only see one post that might, just might, be joking. And I'm not sure about that. Thanks for telling us all off, though, I'm sure it's a great comfort to the cyclist and his family at this difficult time, to know that someone has relieved them of the burden of self-righteousness
