THE Hindu community in Southampton celebrated Diwali and the new year at the city’s Vedic Society Hindu Temple. With his reflections on the important festival is Hindu priest Pankaj Raval who says: “While remembering the history, traditions and devotions to Gods, we could see the social benefits derived from these celebrations.

“These celebrations provide an opportunity for people to forget their personal differences or conflicts with others, and to rebuild family & community relationships. “In modern turbulent times, these festivals act as a catalyst to bring out the good qualities once again. “During these festivals, sharing of gifts signifies the gesture of goodwill, while wearing new clothes places importance on both physical and mental cleanliness.

“Yet, besides the personal efforts to improve oneself, it is important to seek the blessings from the God – the one who is life and breath of creation.

“Faith in God provides us with the strength and courage to tackle any obstacles in life. “In Hinduism, Lord Ram (the incarnation “Avatar”) places importance on truth and righteousness through actions, words and deeds.

“These are the qualities very much required today to make this world a better living place.

“Good qualities as such are very difficult to adhere to in modern life. We may face many difficulties abiding by it. Yet, instilling truth and righteousness, makes us bold, strong and courageous to face any obstacles in life.”
