A prisoner on remand for rape has been found hanged in his cell, the Ministry of Justice said today.

Geoffrey Richard Blakey, 52, was found hanging in his cell at Winchester prison at 6.30am yesterday.

Resuscitation was attempted, but Blakey was pronounced dead at 7.40am, a spokesman said.

''As with all deaths in custody, the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman will carry out an investigation,'' he said.

Blakey, from Southsea, had been charged by Hampshire Police with rape of a child under 13. He was also facing counts of making, possessing and distributing indecent images of children.
