EARLY years learning has been given a boost by the opening of a children’s centre and a refurbished school.

A brand new building for Norwood County Primary School and a new Sure Start children’s centre in Eastleigh have been completed.

The school has been relocated to a newly refurbished building on the same site in Chamberlayne Road, and the new Sure Start centre sits next door.

Entertainment at the opening ceremony, conducted by Eastleigh mayor Derek Pretty, included face painting, farm animals and live music from a steel band.

Chamberlayne Children’s Centre is one of 85 centres being set up across the county by Hampshire County Council with funding from the Government’s Sure Start scheme.

The centres, for families with children aged up to five, provide childcare and early learning, health services, family support, a base for childminders and help into employment.

The refurbished Norwood School now features a music practice room, computer facilities and a new library.

Head teacher Jane Laurie said: “We have been able to work with a blank canvas and create a sensational building that will meet the needs of this community for many years to come.”

Councillor David Kirk, executive member for children’s services, said: “Both the school and the children’s centre boast excellent modern facilities, which will enhance teaching and learning.

“Children’s centres are important as they help to improve life chances by promoting wellbeing as well as enhancing community facilities.”
