THE last remaining nightclub in a Hampshire town has been given its last orders to close down for good.

Eastleigh’s Club Unique has been given 21 days’ notice to shut following problems with fighting and antisocial behaviour in and around the club.

It is the latest in a line of troubled nightspots in the town to be forced to shut up shop.

Last September the notorious Earth Club and Bar, which stood in Upper Market Street until it was bulldozed to be replaced by flats earlier this year, had its licence revoked following more than 140 incidents of fighting and drunk and disorderly behaviour inside and outside the venue.

The Home Tavern, also in Upper Market Street, has shut down in recent weeks – less than a year after its late licence was taken away after a catalogue of violent incidents.

Police applied for Club Unique’s licence to be reviewed after repeated calls to the premises, which is open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays from 9pm to 2am.

Eastleigh Borough Council’s licensing sub-committee has now stripped the club of its licence, ordering it to close down within 21 days unless the owners lodge a successful appeal to the magistrates’ court.

Officers have visited the club’s management regularly to raise concerns and offer support, but the terms of the licence – including providing adequate CCTV – were not met. A statement from Hampshire police said: “Police in Eastleigh have seen no evidence of significant improvement in the way the club was managed. The premises generally did not co-operate with police investigating criminal offences.”

Back in October, the club applied to extend its opening hours until 4am, but the application was withdrawn before it reached the licensing committee.

Eastleigh district Chief Inspector Diana Boyles said: “The safety of the local community is my primary concern and I want Eastleigh to be a place for all age groups to socialise in.

“However, where premises are not complying with legislation we will not shirk from our responsibility to ensure that the licence is reviewed.

“While I am pleased about the decision made in this individual case, I am disappointed that we had to take this step and could not negotiate with the premises’ designated supervisor to run the establishment more appropriately.”

Nobody from Club Unique was available to comment.
