Police today stepped up their hunt for a knifeman after a teenager was stabbed in the street.

The 18-year-old was taken to Southampton General Hospital after suffering a stab wound to his shoulder and a slash across his face.

Detectives say they believe his condition is serious but not life threatening.

The stabbing happened close to the Old Thatched House pub, Romsey Road, Southampton, yesterday.

One lane of the road was sealed off by police who urged drivers to avoid the area and find another route home.

Officers, including teams of armed police, launched a large search of the surrounding area, including parts of Shirley Warren, to find the man responsible.

He was described as black, wearing a bright blue baseball cap, camel coloured trousers and is around 5ft 10 ins tall.

He was seen running off in the direction of Tebourba Way and anyone who sees him is being urged to call police on 999 and not to approach him.

The stabbing happened at 3.20pm.

Anyone with information should call police on 0845 045 4545.

Standby for some police spokesperson to explain that this kind of crime is extremely rare in Southampton. Unless the knifeman is known to the victim, he's not likely to be caught, and the police will be able to go back to directing their days' efforts toward filling in forms, in an effort to bring a prosecution against shoplifters and jay walkers.

The crime that is not rare is the one where Southampton Police shut roads for long periods causing log jam!

Camels can be coloured black, through all shades of brown, to white. That'll make identifying him easy....
And it says he was 'black'? now is that Michael Jackson black or Bradley Black???

Come on Hampshire Police, I'm not going out looking for him until i know???
Till they catch him Fatboy, avoid anyone with darkish skin, wearing a blue (any shade) baseball cap and trousers that aren't in the pastel shades. Follow this rule and you'll be safe.
I'll give this 5 minutes till some dopey sensor claims it's racist!

Not only racist, but also illiterate. "Sensor" should be "censor", and while I support free speech, I find the notion that all sun-tanned persons who wear baseball caps and trousers of a non-pastel shade are potential attackers offsensive.

The colour of a person's skin has no bearing on their personality.

whats he said thats racist? the colour of the skin has a direct bearing on the identity of this offender.

i think his point was avoid anyone with this description until he is caught, abit like avoid anyone in a long brown mac hanging about on the common! skin colour irrelevent!

And now for something completely different...

Hold on, i think he has an idea. There are many shades of white, brown, black and yellow etc. For instace pale white, tanned white, pink white etc. The more acurate the suspects real colour is the better.

Wind your neck in MattProbert, I was being facetious, along with Fatboy, about the description given, nothing more, and whilst I appreciate your obvious higher intelligence a single spelling mistake doesn't make me illiterate any more than my comments make me a racist!

And irony of ironies MattProbert, Harefield, having called me illiterate for my spelling censor "sensor" you've posted;
"slashing savings rates to sero" on another story!!
It's always the little things that catch you out eh?

Firstly, its scary because my brother was coming home from school on that road. Secondly, that is just down the road from me. He'll never get caught, and if he does, he'll play the race cards and get let off.

It is spelt offensive, not offsensive.

Is hardly a racist comment that was made, yet you could have been seen by some to have made a racist comment by using the word "sun-tanned".

well Queen Victoria i can't really say anything about your comment because i have nothing to say. but but i think this whole incident has now tipped the iceberg on knife crime. southampton was supposed to be safe but now you can;t even go out a night without something happening.

The fact that's only a vague description suggests it's a "drive-by" stabbing. Perhaps the bloke looked at the perp funny or something - I've heard lamer excuses!

haha, people argue over anything don't they! This is a pretty strange incident, if the 'perp' did stab that guy, in broad daylight just for looking at him he's obviously a nutter and i wouldnt like to cross paths. Stay safe people.

We don't get a lot of "stabbings" round here though, it's assaults that are more common.
