Police probe after attack on gamekeeper in New Forest

Poachers turn on gamekeeper Poachers turn on gamekeeper

AN investigation is underway after a New Forest gamekeeper was repeatedly kicked and punched in the head during a confrontation with poachers.

Police say the victim approached a silver car in Sowley Lane, East End before one of three occupants knocked him to the ground and launched the vicious assault.

The attack, on Saturday at 3.30pm, left the gamekeeper needing treatment for head and eye injuries at Southampton General Hospital.

Any witnesses should contact Sergeant Jamie Wiseman at Hythe police station on 0845 0454545 or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

A 19-year-old man from the Southampton area has been arrested in connection with the incident. He was released on police bail pending further enquiries and is due to report to Lyndhurst police station on Tuesday April 14.

Why approach poachers on your own? Obviously, massively overconfident of his own prowess. Just take a photo of the car & pass it to the pigs, sorry police.

These are not 'human' they are theives - even Emmerdale has its profile of a family of gypsie/no hopers/travellors - sorry, - nothing has changed they are the dregs, these poachers are dangerous now and two gamekeepers are needed. This is not innocent times of hungry villagers - this is another way to make money for their down and out families and their gutter lives.

i have my doubts that this was a poacher, more like a sea fisherman has this road runs in line with the coast to lymington ferry. i would not be suprise to hear that the keeper became heavy handed and pick on the wrong person, like him over testwood salmon leap if he still there ( that keeper got away with trying to run over officer of the law and a retired judge dog)

Don't be stupid. What is a New Forest gamekeeper's job? He is partly paid to protect the Forest from thieves like these, not go to the police every time he sees something suspicious. Without evidence they can do nothing anyway.

Right.. Firstly he was not on his own, he was with another keeper who also got hit in the face. Along with a 70 + year old man who was pushed over. There were two other men also supporting the keeper but were unable to stop the men. If someone came to where you work and tried to steal something would you not try and stop them???

"Pigs"??? Very clever, did you think of that all on your own?

So little respect, to go along with about the same amount of brains!

He may of thought they would just clear off or respect some authority, sadly much like yourself these people don't understand the need for authority!

No, not on this road. The sea is nearly half a mile to the south in places and tidal mudflats along here make fishing without a boat pointless and launching almost impossible. Tanners lane is the only public access to the sea along here. Sowley Pond is private land - if you are there without the owner's knowledge you are trespassing. And anyway, are you saying it is "normal" to put a man in hospital when he accuses you of trespassing? Isn't the word "no" acceptable? or is there a legitimate jihad against all gamekeepers because of some long forgetten unrelated incident miles away? Nothing in your post makes sense.

andy there are public foot paths to the beach all long that road, and it is good sole, flouder and plaice fishing ground plus bass and mullet theres a bait digging ground along there to, tanners lane is where the public hard and public slipway and is the only road that go's onto the beach, there's been arguements for along time along there, with the few people that live along there, they keep pulling down the public foot paths signs, they also claiming ownership of crown property by saying they own down to the low water, there's was only ever 2 places in the england with that right, one only now, all other places from the top of the highest spring tides(every 200 years) is owned by the crown, and every one has the right to entry to tidal waters, and the gound below highest tides, its also part of the south coast walk path.

sorry i forgot to answer the later part andy,i dont agree with assault, but i do agree a person can defend him self when he is being attack. if you look what the echo has said only one man of the 3 has been arrested and release on bail. whitch suggests its not a case off poaching and just common assault, like i said i would not be surprise if the keeper got heavy handed, theres more to this than meets the eye.

You've changed your tune Vonnie - you didn't believe in evidence last time our paths crossed. In your eyes a preconceived prejudice was all that was necessary. So which is it?

You are just making it up. Access to the shore all the way from Tanners Lane round to Beaulieu river is almost impossible without trespassing, as anyone who has live in Lymington knows. And nobody goes out into the middle of nowhere to carry tons of gear to fish there whether there are fish or not. That's rubbish, and you are just trying to apply your knowledge of Southampton water to an area you don't know at all. The South West Coast Path does NOT run along the shore here because it is private - it runs along the road to Bucklers Hard. The ground below the high tide mark is unwalkable estuarial mud.

no andy i not making it up, there are public foot paths all long that road to the shore line, and if you walk it then you would know that there is a narrow shingle beach at the top water mark, do you know where lucis fisheries is a long that road, if you do, there are foot paths on both sides of his place. theres a foot path along sowley tidal pond, that crosses the field that brings you out on to the gravel spit (old sewer pipe). a little bit long from there is a farmer track, that runs on top of the public foot path. (if you see him you ask him if its ok to drive down his track he normaly say yes and tells you to park up in front of the shed), there are houses on both sides at the end of the track, but from there you aft to walk along the public foot path though the woods, this brings you out near the end off the salt marsh. all those houses that are a long there all there all use to be fishermans huts, apart for 2, ask any real old familys that live in the area and they will tell you the same.

It sounds like you are talking about the priate roads doen to Colgrims and Pitts Deep. There is no public right of way to the shore or along the shore, whether you want there to be or not. Why else do you think The Solent Way is forced to go inland? If you think I'm worng, get an Ordnance survey map and come back on here quoting the map reference of any public footpath or bridleway. And why you assume a gamekeeper in hospital may be guilty of starting the trouble that put him there defies logic - do you think that about every single victim of crime - that they asked for it?

you need to get to know some off the game keepers andy.footy on the test he use to put, crow detonators along public foot paths at nyte with a inch square plate sitting on top, jacksey on the blackwaters he was known to shoot people up the rear with salt pellets, and look at the one thats was there a year go tryed to run over a lawman and a retired judge dog, webby broadland was gun happy to till one nyte he pick the wrong person to shoot at, i tell you game keepers are no angels. also andy mate need to remember that a game keeper only has any rights on the land that his employer owns, once he steps of that land like onto a public foot path or a public road he has the same rights has you and me.
check with the crown commissioners they will tell you different there are public foot paths along that road to the shore line and along the shore line.
