A SIXTH form student from Hampshire today hopes to be crowned Countdown’s Champion of Champions.
Steven Briers has already beaten off competition from 14 others to make it into this afternoon’s final.
The 19-year-old, who is studying at Taunton’s College, Southampton, made it into the series after reaching the quarter-finals in 2006, when Des Lynam and Carol Vorderman presented the show.

The teenager from Thornhill has already given their replacements Jeff Stelling and Rachel Riley the thumbs-up.
“They have got to settle in a bit but they are doing a good job,” he said.
Whether appearing on the show or watching the programme, the former Woodlands Community College student is a big Countdown fan.
“I have watched it consistently for the past five years,” he said.
“Before then I was an on-and-off viewer.”
He will be cheered on in the audience by dad Norman, a printer, mum Julie, who works for South West Trains, and brother David, 22.
Steven, who hopes to study law after completing A-levels in maths and economics, will be hoping for lots of winning nine-letter words, a few easy conundrums and some straightforward sums.
“I like the word rounds the best,” said Steven, who said he hopes to go on Wogan’s Perfect Recall quiz show in the future, too.
