Yet another benefit of working in the public sector..... a bit of snow and an extended week-end break. Luckily the rest of society manages to carry on.

fraugretel says...
9:38am Mon 2 Feb 09

I think it is a severe over reaction to close so many schools at the first sign of snow. I can only imagine it is a health and safety ruling ..madness!If its cold they can wear a coat(oh..cant do that as its against school policy!)..everyone else has to turn up for work - what makes teachers so special!..we are sending the wrong message to our young people-especially at Secondary School age - they should be learning that you must attend no matter what the weather..as that is what you have to do when you go to work (unless you are a teacher it seems!)

Willow71 says...

Can someone tell me why after a little bit of snow (not a foot of snow like some areas) have most of the schools shut? It's ridiculous! I wonder what all the pupils will be doing today? Not every parent can afford to stay home and look after their child.

Willow71 says...
9:52am Mon 2 Feb 09

fraugretel, it is not for the teachers that the schools appear to be closed but for the safety of the children who travel and to school and the myriads of mothers who drive to their children to school.

Flump says...
9:55am Mon 2 Feb 09

Foundry lane closed too had to drive across town only to find it shut if you drive slowly and sensibly it can be done my husband is a driver and he has gone to work today toatally ridiculas closing schools! i used to go to school on snow days and they extending play times for kids to play in the snow!

mummietotwo says...
10:06am Mon 2 Feb 09

I think you will also find that it is the teacher to pupil ratio

cazzercazzer says...
10:16am Mon 2 Feb 09

I was at school before it closed and we were in a much higher percentage than the pupils, seems parents didnt want there little darlings getting cold

fraugretel says...
10:17am Mon 2 Feb 09

willow71 .. I am sorry but it is the parents responsibility to make sure their children are safe - do you really think that the schools that are closed are the only schools where parents drive their children to school ???? For every school that is closed there are hundreds that have managed to remain open! As has been said, many parent will have had to take the day off work because of this..if everyone did this the country would grind to a halt.If a child had a hospital appt today they would get there safely as the parent has a responsibility to ensure that..no difference with getting them to school..except that the Dr would be there to treat the child and the teacher would not be there to teach the child!

10:39am Mon 2 Feb 09

fraugretel!!! can you please use some common sense.
Why are you blaming the teachers? You will find that alot of teachers did indeed make the journey to school, ready to teach. I made my way across to school myself (and was hit by another car on ice) to try and teach said children. Only to be greeted with the school closing. If you look at many schools these days they have many blocks and many pupils moving between them every hour or so. Take into account the amount of pupils at some schools and think about that. What happens when kids fall and hurt themselves?? whos to blame then? Oh thats right the teachers. Think before you speak.. and if you cant say anything constructive then dont say anything.

Have just driven to Winchester from Southampton. Bit slow but not too bad, and yet my sons school in Romsey is shut because the lazy arse teachers can't be bothered to go to work! Everybody else is at work they set a terrible example. The kids would love to be there with the snow and all their mates. Also a lot safer for them than being at home on their own because the rest of society still managed to make it in.

southampton person says...
11:06am Mon 2 Feb 09

Well done on proving the ignorance of some people. There have been two posts on here from teachers saying that they have been to school and were ready to teach. I think you need to find some manners and some respect as without teachers you would have to look after your kids all day everyday. Yes i am sure the kids would love to be playing in the snow with all their mates for the total of 1 hour and a bit they usual get for lunch and breaks - or perhaps they are enjoying the few hours instead? I would love to have an excuse to be home with my kids playing in the snow!!! what are you complaining about? whos lazy now?

So to all those who are busy blaming lazy teachers for shutting up shop at the merest hint of a snow flake i pose this question - what on earth job do you do that gives you so much free time you can moan about everything and anything on this website? Surely you are such hard working people that you cant possibly have enough time for such things if you are able to criticise in such a way??? Also, for information i can tell you that at a certain city school all but two staff either began or completed their journey to work before the announcement of the school closure was made. The reasons for the closure were simple - the bus and coach companies relied up to get the pupils to school were unsure if they could provide the required service. With significant disruption to travel within the city at 7am raising the possibility of many pupils having severe difficulty getting to school using alternative methods, the decision was made before many 'normal' people ventured out. I pose another question - if teaching is so easy, overpaid, bereft of responsibility and blessed with such long holidays, why are you not doing it?? Seriously, if what you say is true more fool everyone else for choosing the wrong career......

I am actually sat in my classroom at this moment. Preparing and making the most to benefit YOUR children. I can tell you that its not teacher pressure that caused the shuts. I know many teachers who tried their best, including teachers who left 2 hours earlier to drive from Portsmouth to Southampton and Winchester. Think you need to take your blinkers off and look at the big picture. Finally when junior slips, trips or falls and hurts themselves at school on the ice what happens then? schools, teachers and everyone else gets blamed and asked why the schools were allowed to open when it wasnt safe. What is the world coming too when someone has to be blamed for an inconvienience?

fraugretel says...
1:48pm Mon 2 Feb 09

I did not intend to make this a vendetta against teachers as I feel they do a very good job that is not always appreciated - my comments were in response to the Echo comment that schools are being closed for broken heating systems and teachers not being able to get to work. ..Just goes to show that you cant believe what you read in the paper!

southampton person says...
2:14pm Mon 2 Feb 09

fraugretel.... i fully agree with your final sentence completely.. you can't always believe what you read.

Jc.. you wonder why people get touchy when on a public forum you call them "lazy a*&e teachers". how would you feel if you were called lazy about your job? (if you have a job that is)

jc himself says...
2:29pm Mon 2 Feb 09

Some of my best friends are teachers (they're not actually, but that's what everybody says) It's not a job I would choose to do, but teachers generally do have a habit of going on about how hard they work, and how underpaid they are when they get about 17 weeks a year off! (and no, I don't believe they spend all of it doing lesson planning). I do have a job but I'm not going in today, have you seen the snow out there!?

southampton person says...
2:49pm Mon 2 Feb 09

all i have to say is haha brilliant answer. now can we go out and play in the snow?

jc himself says...
2:55pm Mon 2 Feb 09

Sure can, lets call it quits. Bagsy be it!

Akeap says...
3:53pm Mon 2 Feb 09

I have have first hand experience of teachers and how hard they work as my Girlfriend is one.

If you class them as lazy ar$E etc with loads of holidays then your sorely mistaken....

She leaves to go to work at 7am and comes home on avarage 6:30pm. (comaparable to "normal" jobs you say).

But do you all then sit and write reports/mark work, re-mark work that was handed in late by pupils and plan leasons to try and stimulate "your poor cherub's minds".

Organise events/trips and all manner of things until 10:30pm+ and then go to sleep and repeat this every day? Bet you don't!

6 weeks off in summer you say! Bah out of this time 2-3 weeks is marking and preping for the next school year....the rest of the holiday is usually recovering from the stress of the job and also colds/flu from being rundown.

So if you work it out then they don't get any more time than a "normal" job to themselves, they work nearly double hours during the week.

When they do actually manage to book a holiday they can't usually afford it because its 4x as much "on school holidays".

Their pay in relation to any other professional with a mandatory degree in education to be qualified is pretty much half what "normal" jobs in the private sector command...

Back on main topic I know plenty of teachers either got to work or pretty much there this morning that only to be call or told that the schools were closed....

My rant is why do all the people "keeping the country going" by going to work drive like complete retards and manage to crash all over the show... maybe the teachers are brighter than you think ?

jc himself says...
4:03pm Mon 2 Feb 09

You really are very rude.
I was at work this morning with almost the whole teaching staff there, but it is far to slippery for children to be walking on.
Day off, yes, however others around the couuntry are off in other jobs or being sent home early, so stop going on at teachers. Really you just sound jealous. Pick up on any mistakes in this... heard it all before, however english is not my subject

jc himself says...
4:40pm Mon 2 Feb 09

cazzercazzer says...
4:42pm Mon 2 Feb 09

Oh right sorry I didnt realise posting this many posts was "teasing" thought it was more like a stark realisation about you choosing the wrong job. My youngest was gutted when he had to got to school this morning. When I collected him at 3.30, he said he had had one of the best days at school!! All teachers and pupils went out onto the field and had a massive snow ball fight and the best thing was they were able to throw snow balls at the teachers, including the head, who said they had to come to school. Thanks to all the teachers who managed to get in and make the day so much fun.

Why don't you just leave it alone. I got the day off, I spent it having fun and walking in the forest. You have been working. Unlucky. I do a full time job for part time pay. Unlucky. I get so much holiday, you don't. Unlucky. Maybe its just not your lucky day

Ok.. you got me.. i am the only person in the world that has a computer that can only do one thing at a time. As for teaching your kids... bit of a silly comment, try thinking first. Some people are actually organised and have a whole week planned but when this happens they have to adjust their work accordingly. Plus i dont see the harm in putting kids work on the walls and arranging rewards and trips as so much of a problem on a day when i have no lessons... im sure if your children were at my school you would surely want me to do that instead of teach them. Im sorry if you find it hard work sitting home with your children... i managed to go out and have a snowball fight with some of my kids and parents joined in aswel - didn't hear much complaints there.

My dear I do not find it hard hard work looking after my children I love each one of my children and I have spent time with them and loved every minute, But they should have been at school today learning. Health and safety has gone beyond a joke now. When I was at school we went in all weathers and enjoyed playing out in the snow and we were all fine. You cant say what if he or she done this or that because of the snow, lifes full of what ifs, kids need to be kids sometimes and not wrapped up in health and safety cotton wool.

The decision has been made to close the school tomorrow for childrens safety (transport) but as someone said the day will be spent reorganising the week. As a nurse who spent over an hour and a half completing what is normally a fifteen minute journey this morning because the roads hadnt been gritted I think as parents you should be ashamed and put your chidrens welfare first. A and E had numerous admissions of people with broken and sprained wrists and ankles. Yes a day off work to look after your children may be inconvenient but there is such a thing as emergancy careers leave that any working parent is entitled to. As for public sector workers being lazy I think you should think about all the hospital nurses and doctors who are staying on site tonight to ensure they are able to be at work tommorrow tolook after the people who arent sensible enough to head the warnings to only undertake essential journeys. Teachers arent free child care and they're govening body in deciding to close schools was only being responsible.

OK
I was at school 3 years ago I highly doubt things have changed

REASONS FOR SCHOOLS CLOSING:
*schools do not have good enough heating for this weather especially when pupils are going in and out of classes it is the same temperature inside as it is outside!!

*Remember if one teacher is stuck in traffic thats 30 kids without a teacher!

This is the first time we have had proper snow in the South for a long time so no one can moan that this happens alot cause it doesn't. So enjoy it whilst it lasts!

Go outside right now and look at your road. It has not been properly salted or gritted, which is why a few inches of snow has presented so much danger to transport.
Southampton City Council Highways Department are responsible for the disruption.
BUT.....we have not had snow like this for 18 years. We have been told by the media and experts to expect warmer winters as a result of global warming. So when the Highways Dept asked for more money to stock up on salt and grit, they were probably ridiculed.

I feel so guilty today - I have 3 children, one at Noadswood School, one at Orchard Junior and one at Orchard Infant, theschools are all on the same site, Noadswood and the infant school closed but the junior school was open, you can imagine how that went down with my little junior! I 'fess that I kept him home in the end, it seemed so unfair - the school were a bit funny about it but how can I explain the logic behind why his school was open and the others weren't to an 8 year old.

Has everyone forgotten the underlying fact that the city was not prepared for this, by this we mean by the lack of preparation to the roads by the council, even though it was forcast for days before it happened. If the roads and been gritted and prepared before monday then people may have actually managed to get to work including teachers safely. There was alot of people who attempted to get to work because of poor conditions it was down right impossible for some people. People ended up in accidents etc. Why is it that rural parts in the Midlands were preping the roads days in advance because they were anticipating that this might happen, and what did our council do NOTHING! In the end it has happened so why cant you all just stop blaming teachers etc they do not have the authority to close without higher permisstion. Get on with enjoying the snow, while it lasts it probably wont happen again for another 18 years (we will still not be prepared for that either).

Evening everyone!
I hope that today hasn't been too much of a strain on you all!
I was up extremely early to make my way to school. The powers that be at my school made the decision to close the school. So why are classroom teachers getting the blame here?!!!
I am a Head of Department and am now concerned about fitting the syllabus into the short time we have with our year 11's. Having 'lazy' days and time off generates alot more work for the 'over-holidayed' teachers!! Homework has still been set which will need to be marked, planning will need to be ammended before the start of next weekend= a weekend of work!! I wish that I had brought more work from school to do at home.
Unfortunately we live in a society where parents think that it is their right to have their say on teachers. Health and safety has gone mad, but that is because parents are quick to sue if their child is hurt while in the care of a teacher.
I love my job, I work hard, I enjoy my holidays where I can. Everyone has the option to become a teacher. If you chose not to don't critiscise those who do!!!

It is all to do with Health and Safety. If your child fell down at school because of the snow and ice, who would you blame. The teachers of course!! Public sector do deserve pay in comparison with the private sector as we all do a decent job

As a teacher myself I find some of the comments posted on this subject frustrating and absolutley ludicrous. My choice to become a teacher was made as a result of my wish to contribute to society, pass on skills to young people and hopefully make some difference to their lives and development as the future generation of this country.

I did not make this choice to indulge in any lazy habits, for the holidays or the 'short' hours. In fact, anyone who can make those ignorant accusations has clearly never been or known a teacher.

I for one was ready and willing to travel to work this week and have actually found it quite concerning that I have lost important teaching time with my year 11's who have life changing exams in a matter of months and whose results I will have to justify if they fail to meet their targets. I, however, am powerless to stop the forces of nature, mend broken boilers and pipes and prevent traffic accidents that occur as a result of the snow.

Rather than being a 'lazy arse' taecher as some very eloquent member of the public posted earlier, I have spent the last two days planning my lessons, making resources, marking work and researching upcoming topics of study. This happens to be what I spend most of my time doing as teaching is a profession rather than a job that you can leave behind when you leave the building.
I'm tired of hearing that teachers don't deserve the 'holidays'. People don't seem to realise that these 'holidays' are quite often spent working in school or at home, running easter schools or in preparing for the coming term. I know of no other profession that has to justify itself to so many, so much of the time.

Anyone who thinks it's an easy job to keep 30 children in check, participating, learning and generally behaving at any one time should give it a go and then see if you need a break after 8 weeks!

It's no wonder that teachers are shown little respect sometimes from the pupils when it is clear that their elders are of the same mindset.

Teaching is one of the most rewarding careers and yet is undoubtedly one of the most stressful which is why the average life expectancy for a teacher after retirement is only 2 years! Good job they get all those holidays eh?

I watched a headteacher on local TV proudly proclaiming that his school was open where many of his colleagues' were closed. (Or should I say ex-colleagues!) He stated that because many staff were unable to travel in, he was operating a "skeleton curriculum". The accompanying footage showed a teacher gamely making a snowman in the playground with a group of children!! Hmm

The reasons for a school closure are many, the following are just a few:

If a certain percentage of staff cannot make the journey in, and many staff travel considerable distances these days, not strolling in from the other end of the village as in yesteryear (LOL) then the maximum class size of 30 children cannot be maintained.

Due to poor maintenance by successive governments' lack of investment in education, many schools have classrooms situated outside of the main building and elf and safety issues arise. As do issues arising from heating, or rather lack of it.

Children entitled to free school lunches may not be able to receive these, if there are problems with deliveries from off-site.

The NUT offer the following advice:

"At one time it was commonplace in some authorities for teachers to report for work at their nearest school when travel to their own was impractical. This is not now considered appropriate. Instead, in the event of school closure, most heads will ask that teachers work at home for the day."

ALSO: " If severe weather warnings are issued, and police advice is to avoid travel unless absolutely necessary, no-one could reasonably criticise you for staying home."

I also watched on TV the fun that people were having, parents and children taking a day off to play in the snow. Then I watched the 25 mile motorway tailbacks and cars in ditches. It's a no brainer really!

I think we all deserve a break from this gloomy credit crunch winter and enjoy the snow without becoming victims of it.

Teaching really is the most thankless job! I am amazed at some of the comments on here! Really is it that much of a problem that some schools have closed? Life is too short. On Monday at our school we had a huge snowball fight on the field with the kids which was brilliant. Today more members of staff were caught up in traffic and dangerous driving conditions but were all trying to get into work. The boiler was not working properly and the school was freezing. The decision was made to close the school. A large amount of parents decided not to bring their children to school on Monday and some were very angry that we had opened the school at all? So tell me parents what is it you want? A free glorified babysitting service in freezing conditions? Come on how about a thank you for all the hardwork we put in?

The uneducated moron's critising teacher's obviously don't mix in the same circles as teachers, if anyone has a friend or relative who is a teacher then they know how hard they work and how stressfull their jobs are. They do a fantastic job! Also why is everyone moaning about schools closing, children get to experience the fun of the snow, the parents get to watch the fun, and the commutors like myself benefit from less traffic. The snow was so beautiful this morning, I dont see how you can moan about it!

I can't believe the ignorance of some of you people. The logistics of opening a school on such extreme weather days are much bigger than 'teachers'. The majority of teachers make the effort, they are NOT the reason schools are shut. The school I work in has around 500 pupils, the road it is situated on and the surrounding roads, were NOT gritted. Can you people not understand the danger that 500 + pupils and there parents would cause trying to get in? What happens when a car skids and hits one of those kids? What happens when a child falls and breaks something on the school paths? Who will you all blame then? And yes teachers do get alot of holiday, but they work more than 39 hrs a week the rest of the year and anyway... they made that choice, you didnt. If you're so bothered, train to teach. People have NO respect for teachers and the job they do, they just see it as a free babysitting service. It's no wonder most teachers leave the profession after only a few years.
