THE man who shot himself dead in a Southampton park has this afternoon been named as William Foxton.
The 65-year-old used a pistol to fire the single shot from which he later died at the scene in Rockstone Place, not far from his family home in Canton Street.
Paramedics and police were called by passers by who found Mr Foxton’s body. They battled to resuscitate him as bystanders watched on, but he was pronounced dead.
Mr Foxton, who lived with his wife, had only recently returned from Afghanistan where he was working on a defence contract.
He had spent much of his career in the defence industry, also working for the United Nations. In his younger years he served with the British Army but left in 1970.
A post mortem examination has been carried out on Mr Foxton’s body which was expected to confirm he had died from a single gunshot wound to the head.
Police have confirmed that a semi automatic pistol was recovered at the scene, near to the city’s Magistrates court, last night.
A file is now being prepared for the coroner.
