Hampshire fluoride protesters to tale campaign to court

CAMPAIGNERS have launched a fighting fund to help take their bid to stop fluoride being added to Hampshire’s tap water to the courts.

Hampshire Against Fluoridation (HAF) is taking legal advice on challenging the decision to add fluoride to the water supplies of nearly 200,000 residents in Southampton, Eastleigh, Totton, Netley and Rownhams.

With no formal appeal process available against South Central Strategic Health Authority’s (SHA) backing for fluoridation, a judicial review remains the most likely route for campaigners.

But going through the courts to question the decision, made after a public consultation last year in which 72 per cent of respondents from the affected area said they were against the plans, could cost thousands of pounds.

HAF is now asking anyone opposed to fluoridation to donate whatever they can afford towards the cost of launching its legal challenge.

It is setting up a fund, but says all money will be returned if it is not used.

The group estimates it will initially need more than £1,000 to start its legal bid, but that amount will rise sharply to as much as £10,000 as the challenge progresses.

Organisers have already gathered more than 2,000 names on a petition they plan to deliver to Prime Minister Gordon Brown once they have reached 10,000 signatures.

“Getting signatures is actually proving pretty easy, because people are really angry about it,” said HAF member Bill Edmunds, from Cadnam.

“It’s a major thing we’re fighting, but I’m optimistic in a way, because everyone is so fired up about it. We’re certainly not going to give in.”

Several Hampshire MPs have also launched challenges to the plans to top up fluoride from 0.08 parts per million to one part per million, which could happen as soon as next year.

New Forest East MP Dr Julian Lewis has complained to the parliamentary and local government ombudsman about the “hopelessly biased” public consultation.

And Eastleigh MP Chris Huhne has called on the Environment Agency to investigate the potential impact of extra fluoride on the county’s rivers and waterways.

The SHA backed fluoridation, arguing that it is the best way to improve poor dental health in Southampton’s children, particularly those from more deprived backgrounds.

HAF is holding an open meeting between 12 noon and 6pm on Saturday, April 4, at Central Baptist Church, Devonshire Road, Southampton.

They have flouride in the water in Ireland and I've never seen so many people in my life with bad teeth there.

I'm not sure what the issues are here but Fluoride has been in our toothpaste for years and it doesn't appear to have any long term health issues.

Why are these people getting so bolshy about such a thing ?

Flouridation is crackpot nonsense. I grew up in Fluoridated Hong Kong (at 1ppm), drinking a lot more water in a tropical climate. Neither myself, family or friends experienced this so called miracle protection! I had fillings aplenty.
I now use fluoride free toothpaste as fluoride paste enflames my gums and causes them to bleed.
This is more about furthering the career paths of the dentists and NHS staff involved than anything else. Labour have latched onto this outdated idea and are forcing it on us from central goverment downwards.
BTW, Hong Kong has since REDUCED its fluoride to 0.5 ppm.
Good to know the UK is woefully out of step, as usual.

The fluoride used in toothpaste is not the same as what's going to be added, it is a by-product of chemical fertilizer waste. Check the net, there is loads on health issues. We have to stand united on this and say and mean no.

A Canadian midwife said to me 'for goodness sake don't give your babies anything with sugar and corrosive drinks because the kids in Canada have great teeth. Give them sticks of carrot and celery, cut up apple to chew on'. We carried this through, and I must say the grown up kids have excellent teeth. The grandparents were a bit aghast because they always brought over sweets.

Good Morning, There are several
reasons why people are getting bolshy about this;

Fluoride in toothpaste
is applied to your teeth whilst you are brushing, then you spit it out,,your
toothpaste also has a Warning written on it telling you to minimise
swollowing.

Secondly what they want to add to our water is not Natural
Fluoride it is something called HEXAFLUOROSILICIC ACID which is a TOXIC
WASTE POISON.

Thirdly,There has never been any clinical trails on the
EFFECTS this poison has to our bodies long term.
I,m sure if you google the
name of this substance you will be very surprised at what you find out.
I hope that this will enlighten you somewhat on this subject.
KNOW-ONE SHOULD BE TAMPERING WITH OUR WATER OTHER THAN TO KEEP IT AS PURE AS POSSIBLE!!!!

People should mellow out a bit. I smoke and drink and occasionally have a kebab. I really don't think flouride poisoning is a major worry for me.

Get over it, if you were not such skanks and brushed ya teeth more often they wouldnt have to put the stuff in the water.

Scaremongering tosh from the same people that would have you believe that MMR causes autism.

Oh my word. I've had the sudden realisation that half the posters on here probably still believe that too.

Dear World,

Good point Iain,
In an ideal world the SHA would like to see kids drinking water as the only healthy alterative.
The truth is those kids that do brush their teeth may only rinse with a little water.

Not a lot of good when they get to school and buy a can of coke and a mars bar from the vending machine in the corridor.

Its OK, they'll ask you for your money *after* all this is over. Just like starting a campaign against it *after* the discussion, consultation, and decision was made. Completely pointless.

What you should read is Ben Goldacre's 'Bad Science' comment in the Guardian in February 2008 when he highlighted the bad science behind water fluoridation. He rightly pointed out that there isn't any good evidence to show that water fluoridation works.

Obviously not. But, there are legitimate studies, being ignored and swept under the carpet, indicating long term negative effects on health.
I'm sick of the nanny state and the disregard for personal freedom and choice.
When will people be left to be responsible for themselves?? (and their offspring)
