HE has the power to bring central London to a standstill by driving a flock of sheep over London Bridge.

Brian Botley is one of only a handful of people in the country entitled to this bizarre right, having been awarded the Freedom of the City of London.

The historical honour dates back to 1237 and originated to give worthy individuals the right to enjoy certain privileges such as to earn money and own land.

Brian, from Bishop’s Waltham, has also been made a liveryman of the Worshipful Company of Carmen.

He was awarded the two honours in recognition of his services to transport and was presented with plaques and certificates at two ceremonies in London, followed by a banquet that was also attended by Princess Anne, the Princess Royal.

Brian, 57, and his wife Janet, 66, set up Hampshire coach company Brijan Tours 20 years ago and the business has grown from one coach to a fleet of 25, today employing 40 staff and based at a depot in Curdridge.

Brijan Tours provide private bus and coach hire, as well as operating bus services between Bishop’s Waltham, Southampton, Eastleigh and Petersfield.

Brian is the managing director of the company and Janet is the company secretary.

The father-of-two and grandfather-offive said: “It was a real honour to be awarded both the Freedom of the City and to be made a liveryman. I was approached to ask if I would accept them. I’m really pleased, now that I’ve got over the initial shock. The Freedom of the City of London dates back hundreds of years, so it sounds strange that I am entitled to take a flock of sheep over London Bridge. I don’t think I’ll be doing that though!”
