VANDALS caused thousands of pounds of damage in a drunken rampage at a Hampshire cricket club.
They destroyed equipment and left the pitch at Fair Oak Cricket Club’s Pavilion Close ground covered in broken glass.
Just seven days earlier the club had celebrated the start of the season by unveiling new facilities paid for by a mammoth winter fundraising campaign.
Two sight screens worth about £1,500 each had been toppled over and smashed and the three brand new pitch covers, worth £2,000 each, were turned upside down, ripped and thrown into bushes.
Residents called police after up to 100 youths caused chaos on the field but by the time officers arrived the damage had already been done.
One neighbour said the vandalism was just the latest in a long line of problems caused by gangs of young people drinking on the field.
