Buy local with help of shopinhampshire.co.uk

IT is the latest weapon in the fight to save our town centres and get independent traders back on their feet.

A groundbreaking new website – www.shopinhampshire.co.uk – encouraging shoppers to buy local has been launched.

The website, thought to be the first of its kind in the country, is the result of a collaboration between Newsquest Hampshire, owners of the Daily Echo and its sister papers, and Hampshire County Council.

The site lists more than 6,000 independent businesses in 33 towns across the county, including phone numbers, web links, parking information and maps.

It also features events taking place across Hampshire.

The launch, held at the White Horse Hotel, followed on from Newsquest’s successful Buy Local, Shop Local campaign supporting Hampshire’s independent traders.

That crusade was so successful it was praised in Parliament.

Dignitaries and guests gathered in Romsey yesterday to celebrate the launch of www.shopinhampshire.co.uk.

Newsquest Hampshire managing director Stewart Dunn said: “The next step in the campaign is a new dynamic Internet site that puts the people of Hampshire directly in touch, online from the comfort of their own homes, with their local retailers throughout the county. It is a website that is wholly unique and is the first of its kind in the country.

“This project has been put together to answer a need for Hampshire residents to shop local with their independent retailers.”

Councillor Jonathan Glen, Hampshire County Council Cabinet member for economic prosperity, added: “It’s vital that we all support our local shops and independent retailers if we are to preserve the economic vitality of our town centres.”

Users of the website can search by town name or shop category – and it is free for businesses to sign up.

Businesses without a website will be able to create their own profile pages.

Far be it for me to criticise local enterprise, I'm all for it. There is a big "however" coming up though..

The article states:

"The site lists more than 6,000 independent businesses in 33 towns across the county....."

Now maybe my definition of independent is incorrect but within 30 seconds of looking at the listings for Southampton I found Greggs bakers and Dewhurst butcher. Hmmm...somebody help me out here :-S

Shop locally and support your towns traders if you don't mind getting screwed in to the ground for the privilege of parking.Have councils ever considered that sky high business rates along with parking taxes might be contributing to the death of local shopping?

I buy lots of things from Amazon online. Not only are they cheaper than local shops but they deliver free of charge, you can send things back to them free of charge if not suitable or faulty. When local businesses become more competitive price-wise I will spend my money with them. I bought a lawnmower for £30 less than for the same model from B&Q.

Spot on. About time the councils accepted people WILL drive to shops and stop screwing them with extortionate parking fees at every opportunity.
For too long town councils have seen parking fees as a limitless cash-cow and, especially in a recession, it's coming back to bite with the traders being hardest hit.

When was this list compiled, and who is monitoring it? The Shoebox Bakery in Portswood closed in February.

Agreed. I think traders should be placing pressure on town/city councils to lower car parking charges.

Good idea until I looked at Southampton Butchers. Dewhurst in Bitterne Village is listed - this has been Kemptons for about 3 years and Millward Meats in Spring road has been pulled down and rebuilt as a tesco local. Great support of local firms. A good idea completely ruined by laziness. No point using the web site.
