Daily Echo readers want new city trail to commemmorate historic liner

BOSTON has its Freedom Trail and Blackpool has its Golden Mile, while the Walk of Fame is one of Hollywood’s top attractions.

Today the Daily Echo can reveal that Southampton now has its own famous walk for visitors to stroll along – the QE2 Mile.

The newly crowned pedestrian route – stretching from London Road down to Mayflower Park – is to be the focus of a new bid to attract tourists.

An enormous anchor from the world’s most famous ship is to go on show, while a £30,000 pavement trail will tell the city’s history.

The title was this week chosen by Saints legend Matt Le Tissier, Councillor Royston Smith and Echo editor in chief Ian Murray.

More than 90 suggestions were put forward by Southampton residents following a public competition held by the Daily Echo and council.

The panel of judges whittled the entries down to a shortlist that also included Titanic Mile, Bargate Mile, Ocean Mile and Spitfire Mile.

After deliberating at the Echo’s offices in Redbridge, they settled on naming the mile-long stretch after the Cunard liner that called Southampton home for nearly 40 years.

Despite being sold to a Dubai investment company for £50m, the trio said the legendary ship’s name should live on in Southampton for generations to come. Matt said the QE2 was a defining icon not only of the city, but of Britain.

“I have been in Southampton for 24 years, it is my home, and the QE2 has always been associated with this city and will be for many more years to come,” he said. No official street names along the route – such as London Road and Above Bar Street – will be changed, but a naming ceremony will take place next month.

It's the QE2 Mile

The route through the city

The mile walk will eventually connect the proposed Cultural Quarter near the Civic Centre with the shops along the High Street and the future Royal Pier/ Mayflower Park development.

Cllr Smith said a location to display the QE2’s spare anchor, which has been kept in storage by the council since her final departure last year, was being sought. He also revealed that work on laying 20 tiles detailing the story of Southampton would begin next year.

“It will bring together the new arts centre, heritage museum and a world class waterfront – they are the three projects that will make Southampton great.”

Mr Murray added: “It is a brilliant idea that we should identify officially this important artery in the city and by giving it a world class name.”

Cunard Line managing director Peter Shanks said: “QE2 was Cunard’s longest-serving liner and she travelled further than any other ship in history.”

Work on the £6m project has already included repaving the High Street, widening pavements and installing new street furniture and lighting.

Good idea to display the anchor, but why on earth has the council kept it hidden all this time - they haven't got a clue, have they? What a bunch of anchors

well i think the name QE2 mile is a tad bit silly and using the part mile is just partly copying blackpool. might of been better to say trail.

A world class waterfront?

Where is that exactly? Surely not 200 yards of Mayflower Park !

Did Matt have a bet on the name chosen?

QE2 mile!!
What a load of rubbish and a waste of time and money, it would be better to rebuild the pier, and that could be called the QE2 pier and then everybody can enjoy it.

Who is going to provide the police escorts needed for protection against muggers, knife wielding drunks and drug addicts ?
Who is going to clean the trail every morning from urine and vomit ?

Who's going to pay for a pier to be built?

Could start with the £30,000 cost of this farcical trail, scrap that hideous museum for the Titanic, and that would pay for the pier to be re-built and it would get a lot more use and I think people would appreciate it more. Visitors and tourists could see all the cruise ships come and go.
Maybe a museum for the Titanic could be built on the pier.

For my mind, this is a step in the right direction. However, "the proposed Cultural Quarter", and "the future Royal Pier/ Mayflower Park development" sends shivers down my spine. I understand all the negativity above. The council has not proven to be at all aware of how to capitalise on Southampton's heritage nor plan a city that could and should be a gateway to the world with all that entails, a vibrant cultural centre, an architecturally forward thinking city which works in sync with its architectural heritage, a city which attracts business and provides entertainment and eating which visitors to the city, ie world travellers from the cruise ships and business leaders, have come to expect and we should be able to enjoy.

I bet the anchor gets pinched for its scrap value by you-know-what-types

Better call it the Titanic Trail because as soon as the money runs out it will sink like a ship thats hit an iceberg.

Interesting to note it is named as a walk. Does that mean bullies on bikes will be fined. London Road is horrendous for pedestrians with cyclists everywhere, cars reversing in and out all the time. Above Bar is an accident waiting to happen. Policemen stand in the area and cyclists cycle dangerously. Yet no action is taken. It is horrendous being a pedestrian in Southampton despite the fact that it is environmentally friendly.

Did you enter the competition in the Echo and suggest something better then??????????? trail reminds me of snails!

I say it's a good idea, unless any of you have got better ideas? Rome wasn't built in a day..... at least this is a move in the right direction....

As for this comment:
"Who is going to provide the police escorts needed for protection against muggers, knife wielding drunks and drug addicts ? Who is going to clean the trail every morning from urine and vomit ?" a tad bit exaggerated me thinks... !! I've used these streets with family and friends at all times of day and night for over 25 odd years (my mum lived here before me) and I've never been threatened with a knife, mugged or otherwise! People should be cautious in ANY city, my friend was mugged in Turkey on holiday!

freemantlegirl2 lol i like that snail's, the snail trail hows thats, i would of just for a bit of fun if i had known about it, but on the whole its not a bad idea, its just the name, then need some thing better, southampton dont revolve a round the qe2, and when you look at the other names the echo, like the golden mile in blackpool, its about what is going on in that location, has with the other 2 names, its about the whole thing, not just a little bit of it. name like the "world's gateway path" would be more apt. because its about what happens here has a whole. dont you agree.

wSEA-QE2--a13.jpg AND THE WINNER IS: Matt Le Tissier, Daily Echo editor Ian Murray and Cllr Royston Smith choose the name for the City Trail.
