Alternative energy on the agenda

THE possibility of introducing wind turbines, geothermal power and tidal energy to Southampton will be discussed by experts tonight.

Southampton Friends of the Earth and Transition Southampton have organised a public meeting to discover how renewable energy can be introduced to the city.

Plans to introduce wind turbines to Southampton were scrapped last year, but tonight’s meeting – from 7.30pm at Central Baptist Church, Devonshire Road, Polygon – will discuss that and other alternatives. Matthew Dean, a member of Southampton City Council, and Southampton Test MP Alan Whitehead will speak at the meeting, which will be chaired by Friends of the Earth co-ordinator Chris Bluemel.

I dont see why large buildings and businesses dont put the small turbines and solar panels on their roofs?

There are lots of buildings in the city that seem ideal for this. High up and open to the wind and light.

Personally I would like to see our Geothermal unit expanded to include many homes and businesses. I dont mind wind turbines either so wouldnt worry about one near me.

tidal energy is not an option for us, has our tidal range is to shallow, and the water moves a bit more slowly than it do else where in the uk, and getting shallow every year by 1mm, its a natural occurrence that is happen all over the world, all due to the fact that the moon is moving away from the earth

I am glad it isn't getting closer Southy, it would make a huge dent!

The moon is the result of a planetary body making a dent ;-)

Anyway.. looks like solar panels have their day. Researchers in the US have come up with some IR panels which are far more efficient, work at night etc.
