Dental surgery opens in secret to avoid crush

HEALTH chiefs are providing another new surgery as part of a £4m campaign to ease the shortage of NHS dentists in Hampshire.

A practice that is due to take on a total of 5,500 patients over the next 12 months opens in Lymington today. – but its location is being kept secret.

Health chiefs fear that scores of potential patients would turn up at the surgery en masse.

To avoid a snarl-up they want potential patients to register over the telephone or online.

The new surgery comes amid increasing concern about the number of New Forest residents who are currently unable to access an NHS dentist.

Terry Scriven, pictured, the Liberal Democrats’ prospective Parliamentary candidate for New Forest East, has written to Health Secretary Andy Burnham and the Government’s chief dental officer Barry Cockcroft.

He has also contacted Richard Popplewell, interim chief executive of NHS Hampshire, which is responsible for dental services.

His letter says: “Letters, telephone calls and discussions on the doorstep indicate that there’s a lack of patient access, a lack of treatment and absence of preventative care.

“The situation cannot continue.

I hope that extra resources can be put into the New Forest before it is too late.”

The Lymington surgery is part of a £4m campaign by NHS Hampshire to increase the number of NHS dentists in the county.

A spokesman said: “We know Hampshire residents are concerned about the amount NHS dental services available and are working hard to increase this.”

The spokesman was unable to provide any figures relating to the New Forest and could only say that 42.75 per cent of Hampshire residents had been seen by an NHS dentist in the past two years.

The new Lymington surgery would bring the number of NHS dental contracts in the New Forest area to 25.

Prospective patients must register by telephoning the dental helpline on 0845 050 8345 or going online - see related links below.

The same could be done in Southampton; there's a certain dental practice down there (no names mentioned) which is renowned for its third world techniques, including telling patients off about dental hygiene when they need urgent work or extractions. The NHS dental service is not what it should be and thats because of the awful way it pays dentists, encouraging them to give the lowest quality care. The whole things a **** disgrace. Welcome to the UK 21st Century style.

Another attempt to conform to Government targets. If its anything like others that have opened recently you'll be lucky if the first dentist you see is still there the next time you go. If you can pronounce their name it will be a bonus. And if they have any idea about patient service and how the NHS works it will be a miracle! You get what you pay for!

It took me 3 years to find an NHS dentist when my old one retired. How great it is to only have to spend £17 on a check up! Shame on this loathesome government for forcing so many dentists to go private through terrible funding.

I totally agree Donald! I'm on my fourth NHS dentist, first having botched crowns/root fillings on my teeth; the second was so **** rude and patronising and accused me of not turning up one week when in fact i had rung to cancel because we were ill. He was also extremely unkind to my children; and the third kept me waiting for an hour and 15 mins when I had an abscess, only to tell me that the dentist had gone home (they'd forgotten about me). I refused to move until they had asked the private dentist upstairs to see me, who cheekily after seeing me for all of five minutes wanted to charge me £30! needless to say I told him where to go. Did I get an apology? Nope, I was told 'these things happen'! I also have never seen the same dentist and one of them I couldn't understand at all! I've complained to the Health Authority, about all three.... NHS patients are treated like dirt, it's a disgrace, standards have gone completely downhill, and NHS dentists tend to treat you like you are something off the bottom of their shoe. We are still human beings you know! Wish me luck, I'm seeing No.4 on Friday.... We still have to pay something with NHS dentists, is it too much to ask that we are treated with respect, courtesy and our dental health treated properly?

I hope the people of Lymington are satisfied with their new service and won't be disappointed. Southampton may have a few, but the three I've seen have been truly, truly AWFUL! shame on you!
