Strip joint to open in former British Legion club

A FORMER Royal British Legion social club could be turned into a strip club on the Isle of Wight.

Proposals have been lodges with island planners to open a new Club Phoenix in the old premises of the Royal British Legion in Orchard Street, Newport.

The application has already been given the go ahead by the parish council licensing committee and now Isle of Wight Council's licensing committee are set to decide it the club, situated opposite Nodehill Middle School and a youth club, can open.

Plans for the club include fully nude dancers, striptease, pole dancing, burlesque dancers, drag and comedy acts, and live music. With the club operating from 8pm to 2am everyday.

The application for the old social club, which closed in June, has sparked outrage across the island as communities prepare to mark Remembrance Sunday.

Newport Royal British Legion president Ray Flux said: "I am shocked by the proposal and at the location."

Nodehill Middle School headteacher David Morris said he would object the plans which are up for decision on November 19.

"I am gobsmacked and appalled by this. I cannot think of a more inappropriate place to have this kind of club," he said.

The building itself is irrelevant - far seedier establishments in this Country and all across Europe have been frequented by ex-servicemen of all ages since the turn of the last century.

With Royal British Legion Branches and Club premisses (which they own)being closed down and sold off ( to save money & make profits) by the bigwigs at British Legion Headquarters in London, this doesn't surprise me one bit, I have no doubt they will sell more of their buildings off to make way for other sleazy ventures like this one

The legion does a great job in supporting service and ex service personnel, but sometimes I wonder at their logic, when the national committee chairman has a chauffer driven car at his disposal morning noon and night, and they say they close Legion clubs down because they need more money.

Rather ironic that this is announced on a day when there have been reports of Collection Boxes for the Poppy Appeal have been stolen on the island.

The service of remembrance contains the words, "We will remember them." It seems as if some are only to keen to forget!

Since the turn of the last century? Seems we still have stupid girls willing to show next weeks washing to any dribblybit that is ugly enough to have to pay for this sight. The good looking men are all taken by good decent women who have never degraded themselves this way. These women will never be marriage material only the dirty little secret.

So, you think there's no good looking men in these establishments? You think they are all at home with their good decent women? A vast amount of customers in strip clubs are married men, and a vast amount of kerb-crawlers are married men. They may all have decent women sat at home, but when he's trying to watch the football and she's muttering in his ear about the next boring family gathering, or what DIY needs doing, there's only so much a man can take before he disappears to the dark side

If this is your attitude to married life then I take it you are by yourself and your wife has moved onto better things, good for her, you carry on watching your footie, and missing out on family get togethers, let your house fall into disrepair, I rest my case, you sad desperado.

The Isle of Wight NIMBY's are going to live this story. The IOW is so backward is shocking, they all hate change, but if the majority of the men in newport would admit, they will flock to the club. At the end of the day its a legalised business, so whats the problem? As for being near a school, again whats the problem? The girls are not going to be dancing on the pavement outside of the school are they...
