A CHRISTIAN aid volunteer has travelled to Africa to get an insight into charity work. Student Abi Knowles, from Portswood, Southampton, is on the Christian Aid gap year scheme and has gone to Kenya for two weeks with a team of volunteers.

She will look at the effects of climate change on the people living in the slums of Nairobi and at farming projects in the east of the country.

Abi will also see what Christian Aid partner organisations do on projects such as water, sanitation, the effects of climate change and support work for children orphaned by HIV and AIDS.

The volunteer will share her experiences with students from Southampton and Solent Universities and Winchester University.

For the next ten months, Abi will be based in the Christian Aid office in Shirley to work with young people in Southampton to get them inspired and involved in issues like poverty, HIV and AIDS, climate change and trade justice.
