Winchester civic chiefs have given a big boost to a village shop near Alresford.

The City Council has contributed £20,000 to Cheriton Post Office and Village Stores.

The shop is the first recipient of one of the council’s Village Shop Grants, one of its initiatives implemented in response to the downturn.

Proprietor Gillian Gray-Knight said: “We have been able to give the shop a real make-over, resulting in a wider range of goods for sale.”

George Beckett, leader of Winchester City Council, also pictured, said: “Cheriton stores provide an essential service for the local residents, as well as tourists and visitors.’’ The grants of up to £20,000 are available to village shops within the Winchester District which provide essential basic services for the rural communities they serve.
