HUNDREDS of people are expected to descend on Winchester Cathedral for the return of the Christmas Market and Ice Rink tomorrow.

The events are part of a host of festive celebrations including carol singing, a life-sized traditional Nativity scene, a service for Christians around the world and a Father Christmas Grotto.

The Winchester Ice Rink last year

The opening of the market and ice rink starts with a lantern procession from the Great Hall at 6.30pm culminating in a ceremony at the Ice Rink at 7pm.

The Christmas Market, which is situated beside the Cathedral and surrounds the Ice Rink, will feature more than 90 chalets filled with gifts, decorations and festive foods. The market has been extended by an additional week this year until December 20 while the ice rink will continue until January 3.

TV presenter and writer Alan Titchmarsh is also due to present The Lord Lieutenant’s Carol Concert on December 12, at 7pm.

There are two special afternoon carol services, one at 12.30pm on December 19 by the girl choristers and one marking the final day of the Christmas Market on December 20 at 3.30pm by the boy choristers.

Public carol services will be held on December 19, 21, and 22 at 6.30pm, free tickets are required for December 19.

Last year an estimated 250,000 people visited the cathedral over Christmas with around 40,000 skaters taking to the ice.
