STRANDED motorists were treated to a glass of wine and some curry as a Hampshire village hall was turned into a refuge for the night.

About 30 cars and three lorries got stuck in a dip in the A32 at Droxford, north of Fareham, and had to be abandoned for the night.

Dozens of volunteers in the small village banded together to bring aid to the stricken drivers and their passengers. One man was on his way to Cardiff.

Village hall chairman Tim Crowfoot said: “The village was out there giving people tea and coffee in their cars.

“We opened the hall and had around 12 people camp in there overnight.

“The local pub, the Baker’s Arms, brought down curry.

“The other pub, the White Horse, did a roaring trade and looked after a lot of people.

“Another person was towing people up and down the hill.”

He added that one parish councillor even took a crate of wine for the refugees.

He said: “They were very cold and fed up and concerned because they just wanted to get home. But they were all extremely grateful.”
