POLICE and fire officers are this morning investigating a suspicious car fire in a Hampshire neighbourhood.

Firefighters from Gosport were called to Thornton Road in the early hours of this morning after flames engulfed a Chrysler six-seater.

The blaze was so fierce that it damaged another car, a nearby shed and a garage before the crew were able to get it under control.

Once it had been distinguished officers discovered a second fire in a nearby caravan that had failed to take hold.

Firefighters called in the police, who stood guard at the scene through the night, before officers from both services start their investigations this morning.

Watch manager Kev Roberts said: "Due to the way the car were parked it was very difficult to get to the fire but luckily the cars were parked away from the houses which prevented further damaged."

Anyone with any information about the fire, which started at 2.20am this morning, should contact Gosport police station on 101.
