A FLOOD of words has been heading towards the organisers of the Winchester Writers' Conference.

The annual event, celebrating its 25th anniversary, holds numerous competitions and this year the number of entries is expected to break the 3,000 mark.

Organiser Barbara Large said: "We have had entries from as far away as Nairobi, Brussels and New Delhi, as well as Lymington, Totton and Winchester.

"This the silver anniversary so it's quite exciting. It is wonderful to be able to help them hone their creative ideas."

The event at University College runs from June 24-26.

The main speaker is novelist Fay Weldon. Other notable speakers include crime writer Graham Hurley and poet U A Fanthorpe.

A week of workshops runs from June 27 to July 1 at Shawford Hall, Shawford.
