THE very first festival took place in August 1968 with tickets just £1.25! The stage back then was made from two trailers joined together, and attracted a tiny audience in comparison to later festivals.
The first festival on the island became known for its diabolical toilets and made headlines with horror stories of a punter who had to climb out of the giant cesspit that unfortunately was the lavatory.
A more ambitious festival was staged the following year headlined by the one and only Bob Dylan. The 1970 festival though proved to be the defining moment in its early history. With the greatest guitarist of all time Jimi Hendrix in the line up, this was to be his last ever performance: he died 18 days later.
The festival attracted more than 600,000 fans, mainly without ticket, and saw over one million rampaging hippies taking over the island, breaking down the perimeter fence and causing havoc for police and festival staff.
It was decided that enough was enough and the festival was banned forever..well until 2002 anyway! Since then there have been four including this weekend's three-day music marathon.
Headline acts have included the mighty Charlatans, legendary rockers The Who and the God that is David Bowie! This weekend's line up though is arguably the best yet! All that leaves What's On to say is enjoy!
