THE sale of almost 10 acres of military land in Tidworth to supermarket group Tesco has gone ahead, Defence Estates has been confirmed.
Defence Estates, the agency responsible for MoD sites and buildings, says the new supermarket will help regenerate the town's economy. The site, known as Station Road Green, was 'surplus non-operational land.'
Tidworth's garrison commander, Col Carron Snagge, welcomed the scheme. "The new supermarket will provide a much needed facility that Tidworth Garrison and the wider community urgently need, and one which will boost the local economy," he said.
Defence Estates, the MoD's property adviser, considers it to be a 'first rate land deal' in Tidworth.
In 1998 Defence Estates also sold land on the corner of Station Road and Pennings Road to Lidl. Defence Estates deputy director for Land Management South, Wendy Ivess-Mash said: "The disposal of this site has certainly enabled a much needed major facility to be provided.
