Originally screened by the BBC, Abigail's Party is a brave choice as the audience's expectations are high. A snap shot of the lives of three sets of neighbours, at a clichd soiree. Marital bliss and tact is not served with the hors d'oeuvres and gin.
From the start this had promise, the set was a 70s flashback. Marina Voak shone as the anxious and out-of-place Susan, just the right amount of hand-wringing!
The men were weaker and needed to work at giving a consistent performance with fluid personality changes. They did provide humorous moments, especially Tony's (Graeme Clements) deadpan delivery of lines. Sarah Miatt (Angela) gave a very funny performance of the socially inept neighbour.
The pace dropped in the last few minutes and lacked the final drama needed to pull off the conclusion. A good start for The Innuendo Theatre Group's first production.
