ANDOVER 1st XI, sponsored by Powells, were trounced by Portsmouth in the first of the all day games this season - although the match did not last all day!

Portsmouth won the toss and invited Andover to bat on a sticky wicket to say the least. The Powells side got off to a very bad start when their overseas player Pieter Haasbroek was out for two, in his first game for the first team.

Toby Radford joined the Mark Miller, who was standing in as captain for the day, as his brother Roger was injured, and they put on 43 runs before Toby was caught by Savident, off the bowling of Prittipaul for 15.

Radford was the first of four batsmen who fell to the large hands of Savident in the gully.

Mark Miller was next to go, for 30 runs, again off the bowling of Prittipaul.

When both Saye (14) and Hooper (18) were adjudged LBW from the bowling of Hayward Andover appeared in a very sorry state.

However, Danny Dancer, in his first game for the first team, together with youngster Chris Hadfield, kept the game alive for another 10 overs before Dancer was caught by Barnes off Prittipaul for 23 runs.

Andover finished on 136, with Hayward taking 5-22.
