A SELECT field of ten runners will go to post for the Southern Daily Echo sponsored race at Goodwood tonight.

With fine weather assured, the course will attract a bumper crowd, who will almost certainly send off Sir Michael Stoute's Master of the Race favourite for the one-mile maiden.

By Selkirk, whose greatest hour came at the track when he took the prestigious Sussex Stakes, the three-year-old has finished second in both his starts.

Runner-up in a seven-furlong race at the back end of last season, he was sent off at odds-on for his seasonal debut at Newmarket in the spring but ran green. He is sure to benefit from tonight's extra three furlongs.

Most danger is likely to come from the John Gosden trained Borouj, whose half sister Lahan won the 1,000 Guineas. He stepped up on form when second in another Newmarket maiden on his latest outing.

Punters are also likely to latch on to Persona who is significantly partnered by Frankie Dettori for the first time. The 50,000-euro purchase hinted at ability with a fourth on his debut for the Jeremy Noseda yard at Windsor in April but then disappointed when strongly fancied on his return trip to the track last month.

The race is off at 7.20pm.
