JOHN CRAWLEY is set to play against England as a wicketkeeper - six years after his one-day international career ended behind the stumps.

Crawley played the last of his 13 one-day internationals as a wicketkeeper against Sri Lanka in Sydney in February 1999.

And now he is set to continue to deputise for the injured Nic Pothas after equalling a Hampshire record in last Saturday's County Championship thriller against previous leaders Nottinghamshire at Trent Bridge.

Crawley became the first Hampshire wicketkeeper for 16 years to record six dismissals in an innings (5ct/1st) as Shane Warne's men went 12 points clear at the top.

And he is set to keep his place after taking a further two catches, including an excellent diving effort down the leg side to dismiss Stuart Law, as Hampshire beat Lancashire in a one-day match for the first time in 13 years on Sunday.

Former England Academy batsman Derek Kenway is likely to retain his place at the top of the order, after scoring 65 on his return to the one-day team at Old Trafford, but manager Paul Terry is unlikely to hand him the gloves.

Terry said: "There's a fair chance that John Crawley will be keeping wicket, he did it very well last weekend and it will be good for Derek to continue to concentrate on his batting."

As expected, Warne will not miss the chance to captain a team against international opposition for the first time and off-spinner Shaun Udal, who played ten ODIs from 1994-95, has the chance to show England what they have missed over the last decade.

Terry added: "Warney isn't looking forward to this game more or less than any other, there was never much chance of him having a rest!" Sean Ervine had an operation on his ankle on Tuesday so is rested, but will definitely play against Surrey in the County Championship on Wednesday.

Terry is also confident that Pothas (finger) will be fit to face Surrey at The Rose Bowl but the news on Dimi Mascarenhas is less encouraging.

The all-rounder continues to make slow progress from his lower back injury and is unlikely to be fit to face Surrey. Second XI trio Jimmy Adams, Chris Benham and Lawrie Prittipaul also have a good chance of playing tomorrow - in front of the biggest crowd of their careers.

A 10,500 crowd is expected, which would be the biggest crowd for a Hampshire home match in the county's history - surpassing the 9,000 that watched the inaugural Twenty20 match against Sussex at The Rose Bowl two years ago.
