Winchester'S popular series of summer evening walks returns to the streets this month.

Organised by the City of Winchester Trust, the walks aim to increase interest and knowledge in the often neglected aspects of the city's past.

All walks start at 6.30pm from the heritage centre, except where shown. Donations of £1 are invited. Non-members are welcome.

June 9: Pubs of Winchester, part one. Meet at King Alfred's Statue. Led by Phil Yates, city resident and pub expert.

June 16: St Cross Hospital and Chapel. Meet at porter's lodge, Michael Carden, architect.

June 23: Architecture Week walk with Keith Leaman, architect.

June 30: Winchester churches past and presented by Richard Baker, architect.

July 7: St Thomas Street, with Andrew Rutter, retired council conservation officer.

July 14: Around Northgate and nearby, with Barbara Hall, chairman of Friends of Hyde Abbey Garden.

July 21: Buildings of the High Street, with Robin Freeman, local studies librarian.

July 28: A post box walk, meet at Middle Brook Street Post Office, with Chris Pile, trust member.

August 4: Northington Grange. Meet at The Grange, near Alresford, with David Brock of English Heritage.

August 11: Restoring ancient stonework, with John Wells, Winchester College works bursar. Meet at the school's porter's lodge, College Street.

August 18: The village in the city: a walk around Hyde with Nick McPherson, architect.

August 25: Pubs of Winchester, part two, with Phil Yates. Meet at the Westgate Hotel.

The first walk, on June 2, was Winchester in its landscape setting, led by Merrick Denton-Thompson.
