JOHN GRAY has won the Mosella Stafford Moor Spring Festival in Devon for the second year running.

It was a remarkable double for the Reids Tackles' angler on a venue that produced a huge haul of fish to 96 anglers over four days.

The Salisbury angler once again beat some of the country's best to collect £1,600 in prize money and prizes.

Gray had three section wins and a third to finish with six penalty points. It was the same as Keith Dawes from Nottingham but Reid's superior weight of 415lb 9oz easily outpointed Dawes, who weighed in 335lb 8oz.

Gray took 100lb 9oz of carp to 6lb on pole and pellet from Josephs on day one. Day two saw a section third with 75lb 4oz from Tanners, while on day three Gray broke the match record on Pines Lake with a massive 140lb 7oz of carp. A section win on the final day on Woodpecker with 110lb was enough to secure the victory.

Dave Roper (Pewsey) finished just one point behind the front two in third spot with seven penalty points.

The Annual Witherington Farm Teams of Four Charity Match in aid of the Basingstoke Hospital and Lady Romsey's Leonora Fund saw about £1,000 raised for the charities.

The event also turned out to be a charity for Barneys Blacks. They won it and also fielded the top three individuals. Paul Barnard, Malcolm Pepperell, Ian Goodfellow and Lee Goodfellow all took section wins which compensated for a last in the section by Jim Smith. Kennet Ospreys finished level with 11 penalty points but Barneys' weight advantage was far superior.

Ian Goodfellow took top weight with 95lb 5oz of carp to 7lb on waggler and pellet from Selwood with brother Lee Goodfellow second (92lb 1oz of carp to 8lb on pole and paste from Barnmoor). Paul Barnard was third with 68lb 2oz of carp to 6lb on pole and paste from Topmoor.

Eastleigh Mosellas' Richie Self really is a rising star. The teenager once again proved too strong for his elders in the Stoneham mid-weeker, taking 44lb 14oz of tench on pole, pellet and worm from peg 34 to win comfortably from Homestores Sensas' Marc Illingworth, who had a mixed bag for 28lb 14oz on waggler up in the water from peg 36. Dean Rowden finished third with 27lb 10oz.

Others: G Tappenden (Homestores Sensas) 25lb 5oz, R Hayward (Homestores Select) 23lb 10oz, S Barber (Wessex) 22lb 4oz.

The Stoneham club match sponsored by Wessex Angling Centre's Simon Barber saw a turnout of 57. Marc Illingworth (Homestores Select) took ten carp to 12lb for 87lb 15oz on waggler and pellet up in the water from the dam wall on the top lake to get the better of Dave Bennett, who had six carp to 10lb on the same method from the next peg. Chalkie White finished third with a mixed bag of carp and skimmers from peg 107 on the top lake with Kings Toyota's Gary Naylor fourth with 30lb 10oz.

Others: H Salkeld 27lb 7oz, P Sears 23lb 2oz.

Top under-16 on the day was Matt Taylor, with 16lb from the top lake, while over-16 winner was Matt Keator, with 8lb 10oz from the top lake.

The Cormorants club match on Witherington Farm's Topmoor saw the latest surface bait craze score again.

Steve Rochester took 86lb 4oz of carp to 7lb on pole and floating bread mainly late in the match from peg 81 to get the better of Mickey Hills, who led for the majority of the match and finished second with 72lb 14oz of carp from the next peg. Dynamite Baits' Simon Hambidge finished third with 56lb 8oz of surface-caught carp.

Others: G Maton (Cormorants Team Sillybaits) 31lb 6oz, P Newman (Poingdestres) 27lb 8oz, T Bremble (Reelcare) 25lb.

Thursday's Stoneham Open saw victory go to Dave Self (Eastleigh Mosella). In another tight frame of consistent weight, Self took 32lb 1oz of tench and skimmers on the pole and caster and worm from peg 45 to get the better of Kev Downer, who had 31lb of tench and skimmers, with Lee Woodhouse third with a mixed bag for 29lb 6oz.

Others: M Marsh 29lb, R Haywood 28lb 4oz, M Brown 26lb 1oz.

The Greenridge Open saw success for Colin Stark, who took 106lb 4oz of carp to 10lb on surface baits from peg 16 on canal two to get the better of Homestores Sensas' Graham Tappenden, who took 59lb 5oz of carp on pole and maggot in the margins from peg 13 on canal two. Marc Ilingworth (Homestores Select) finished third with 56lb 4oz of carp from peg 17 on canal two.
