A NEW centre which will improve the lives of hundreds of local people with cancer has opened its doors in Southampton.

The Macmillan cancer information and support centre at Southampton General Hospital has been made possible following a £1m fundraising drive, backed by the Daily Echo.

Thousands of local people have done their bit to help Macmillan Cancer Relief turn the dream into reality.

Built in just ten months, the fac-ility will provide help and advice for anyone whose life is affected by cancer.

Designed to offer a homely atmosphere, the centre has been built in complete contrast to the stark wards and cold hospital corridors often associated with cancer care.

The building will support those living in south Hampshire, as well as people from the Isle of Wight, Dorset, Wiltshire and the Channel Islands.

An estimated 3,000 people are expected to make use of the centre in the first year alone.

Facilities include complementary therapies, support groups, inform-

ation leaflets, Internet access, Macmillan staff, stylish wigs and headgear and advice about patient grants and state benefits.

Yesterday the centre was declared open by Southampton Mayor Ed-wina Cooke and city sheriff John Slade, with the help of town crier John Melody.

Connie McConachie, Macmillan fundraising manager, said thanks went to all who helped the appeal.

The Macmillan cancer information and support centre is open from Monday to Friday between 10am and 4pm. No appointment is necessary. For general enquiries, contact 023 8079 6037.
