THE Access Festival at the Mayflower Park on Southampton's waterfront returns on Saturday, featuring some of the area's hottest bands.

The Shan, Murmur, The Sways, Six Nation State and Dead! Dead! Dead! all appear in the free, eight hour-long music marathon, which was held for the first time last year.

The event starts at noon and also stars Steve Lowis and System Era.

Who needs Glastonbury?

RISING stars Xavier Floyd Firebird join Radio 1 DJ Edith Bowman at the Southampton Institute Summer Ball tonight at Eastleigh Park. The band also begins a tour support slot with JJ72 next month including a gig at The Joiners on June 8. The hotly tipped rockers play alongside Six Nation State at Southampton's Lennons on June 9 and headline with fellow local band The Departure at Power FM's Incoming show on June 17. Busy boys then!

PORTSMOUTH'S Bonemachine are close to completing the follow-up to their triumphant debut album Vent.

The new record is called Why Can't We Catch The Liars? and is a return to the band's roots, with industrial beats, dirty samples, screaming guitars and loads of misery.

Full-length MP3s will be available on the band's site soon at www.bonemachine.co.uk
