The basketball season has proved to be a truly memorable one for The Mountbatten School, Language and Sports College, with all its teams enjoying a high level of success.

Early in the season, the U13 team won the Southampton and District Tournament, in which 12 schools participated. Mountbatten's David Gardner was voted 'most valuable player' at the event.

The U14 team played in the Southampton and District League competition in the West Division winning all their games and reaching a play-off final with East Division winners, Crestwood School. Mountbatten were runaway winners by 77-34 with Aidan Kelly (24), James Blandford (18) and David Gardner (17) were the main points' scorers.

The U14s also reached the final of the Hampshire Schools' Cup competition, where they slammed Bohunt 89-34. Scott Bessey (24), Aidan Kelly (23), David Gardner (21) and James Blandford (16) were the main scorers.

The U15 team with no district league in which to participate, concentrated all their efforts in the Hampshire Schools' Cup competition. After several games, including a really tough semi-final against Priory School, they took on a talented Bohunt School team in the final. Mountbatten led until the final quarter, when injury and 'foul' trouble resulted in a 71-63 defeat. Matt Renouf (18), John Nye (18) and James Darios (16) were Mountbatten's top scorers.

The U16s have again been exceptional! They won all their games in the Southampton and District league West Division convincingly.

The winners of East division, St. Georges, proved no match for them in the play-off final, the score of 82-36 reflecting Mountbatten's superiority. Liam Kelly (24), Lukas Jutkiewicz (23) and Matthew Warwick (16) were the main scorers.

In the Hampshire Schools' Cup competition, the U16s reached the final against Bohunt School once again. An exciting and hard fought game saw Mountbatten emerge victorious by 87-85. Lukas Jutkiewicz (38) and Liam Kelly (22), were the main points contributors.

Mike Hughes, teacher in charge of basketball, said: "To win five out of six competitions in one season is a remarkable achievement, possibly never to be repeated!"
