A FORMER Hampshire mayor has launched a third controversial attempt to demolish the luxury home of his estranged wife of 27 years.

Keith Estlin, who was the county's environment and transport chief until his retirement this month, sparked outrage when he submitted plans to redevelop the Warsash plot by demolishing the house lived in by 69-year-old Ann and build another house alongside it.

The Estlins' neighbours in Thornton Avenue bombarded planners with 40 letters of objection and a petition ahead of the decision in March to reject the plans.

Now Fareham planners have received an outline application from their former mayor to demolish the existing home, which enjoys stunning views of the River Hamble, and replace it with two building plots.

Mr Estlin, also 69, moved out of the marital home in September and is believed to be living with a new partner, dividing his time between an address in Poole and property in France.

The Daily Echo understands the bid is an attempt to increase the value of the property, which is expected to be sold as part of the couple's divorce settlement.

Mrs Estlin said she was unable to comment but has previously spoken of her distress at having to leave her home of 20 years.

Next-door neighbour Cliff Norbury says the application is the latest in a long list of plans for the site, which have included him being offered cash by developers to turn the two plots into two blocks of 17 flats.

He said: "It would spoil the view of the river from the road and Warsash from the river.

"There is a covenant which prevents alterations to the north wall of the house.

"If ever allowed, I'm sure it would end up being two plots with a lot more than two homes on it."

Warsash Residents' Association has also objected to the latest plans for the site, which lies in an area designated a coastal zone and an area of special residential character.

Villagers believe development would obscure river views.

Chairman Ken Prangnell said: "Two homes on that plot would be totally inappropriate."

The plans are due to be considered by Fareham planners on Wednesday, June 15. Mr Estlin was unavailable for comment.
