YOUNGSTERS at Micheldever School launched a £75,000 appeal for a new building with the release of hundreds of red balloons.
The education authority has agreed to fund the bulk of the estimated £2m cost of the building, which will include new classrooms, kitchen and a modern hall.
But the school must find the additional cash to help pay for the revamp.
The school, with its impressive clock tower has provided a central focus for the village, along with the church, for more than 130 years.
But, at present, youngsters have to be taught in prefab buildings-one of which has been there for some 50 years.
As well as providing a new building, the revamp will involve extensive modernisation of the old one.
One of the main benefits of the refurbishment is that the children will be able to enjoy PE classes at the school instead of having to make the potentially hazardous trip to the village hall along the road which has no pavement.
To support the fund-raising effort, contact the Micheldever School Development Trust through its website, www. micheldever-school-development.org.uk or call the school on 01962-774213.
