Gosport & Fareham took an authoritive step out of the London 2 Sth relegation zone as they sunk Camberley to move two points clear of the trailing pack with just two games to play.

But local rivals Portsmouth look like they will have to settle for the dangers of the play-off for the third time after suffering on their travels, falling 32-22 to mid-table Sidcup with a heavily weakened side.

Gosport ran in four tries in their crucial win - two of which came from Jonathan Wood - to give them the edge over their nearest rivals, all of whom lost.

But they face leaders Barnes next before fellow strugglers Tunbridge Wells in three weeks and an air of resistance has crept in after this latest win.

"Not many people expect us to go to Barnes and win but we have players back and that will give us a boost," said coach Sean Fanning. "We are not just going there to make up the numbers."

Portsmouth, meanwhile, will be hoping their rivals can do them the favour and the RFU answer favourably their appeal over the defeat against Dartfordians last month to boost their chances of the automatic promotion place.

Their weak team were well beaten at Sidcup by the Kent men's weighty pack, tossing away a 10-0 lead in the process and rugby manager Nigel Morgan admitted they missed their injured and unavailable many.

Barking were crowned National 3 South champions after they blew Havant away, particularly in the first half, running in eight of their nine tries before the break.

It was already 50-0 at the interval and extended further before Havant got on the board in a period when they performed much better, although that was not difficult in the face of the abject showing earlier.
