A NEW booklet, Get Wise: Highway Code for Electric Scooters and Wheelchair Users, has been released following a call by an MP to regulate their use.
The booklet has been issued by the British Healthcare Trades Association following Liberal Democrat MP Bob Russell's announcement that the government should regulate the use of electric vehicles because people with incorrect vehicles for their needs are posing a serious threat on Britain's roads.
These vehicles have usually been bought secondhand, privately or through unscrupulous dealers.
Sarah Lepak, director at BHTA, said: "We would always advise consumers to buy their motorised scooter from a reputable BHTA dealer who is signed up to the BHTA code of practice.
"The dealer is in the best position to give help and advice.
"In addition, anyone considering buying an electric scooter is advised to first read the BHTA highway code.
"This was written by a scooter user Margaret Godfree as a result of her experiences over 18 years.
The leaflet covers all the general points to consider before buying a vehicle.
