A NEW era has dawned for libraries in Hampshire with the opening of a £2m state-of-the-art discovery centre in Gosport.
The transformed former library, museum building and gallery in the High Street is the first of its kind in a multi-million-pound county council project to respond to a national decline in visitor numbers.
Visitors will be able to borrow the latest blockbuster, dig up fascinating facts about their ancestors, surf the Internet and enjoy theatre and dance.
An official opening ceremony yesterday was attended by Lord McIntosh, the minister for media and heritage, civic dignitaries and TV genealogy expert Dr Nick Barratt from BBC2's Who Do You Think You Are?.
Hampshire's recreation and heritage chief Councillor John Waddington said: "Whether you want to study, socialise or simply seek somewhere to find inspiration and stimulation, Gosport Discovery Centre has something to offer everyone."
