HARRY Redknapp admitted he won't have much money to spend in January - but is still planning to "pull a few rabbits out of the hat."

Having said the current squad is not really good enough to survive, Redknapp is targeting new players to bring in next month to keep Saints in the top flight.

But he says it will mainly have to be free transfer and loan signings

"All I'm doing is thinking about players I can get in," said Redknapp after Saturday's game.

"If I can I think we'll be OK.

"The finance is going to be tight but he (chairman Rupert Lowe) has got to know it's no good saying we've got all these good players because they're second from bottom.

"And this started since last Christmas - not just this season. They were fourth and went into rapid decline.

"We need to strengthen somehow.

"I'm going to try and pull a few rabbits out of the hat in January - free transfers, loans, beg, borrow and steal a couple of players from somewhere and see if we can do it."

He added: "I need to find a few players from somewhere. We need to hang onto the goalkeeper, he's different class.

"When Beattie's fit we've got enough forwards, but other areas of the pitch we need to find something."

Redknapp is also hoping to tie up a deal to bring Jim Smith to Saints this week.

Smith was in the crowd at White Hart Lane on Saturday but Redknapp joked that seeing Saints' display might put him off wanting to join him.

Redknapp said: "Jim was here but now he might think 'looking at that, I might not bother.'

"We're all going to sit round and have a chat.

"He's got a bit of life about him and we need that in the dressing room.

"He'd get into a few of them maybe and wake a few up."
