The teams started level on points but it was Andover who took the narrow win.
The University showed pace and quick passing early on, but Andover produced some fantastic hockey and had the better of the early exchanges. The remainder of the first half saw Andover control play, particularly through the centre where the University looked to channel their attacks.
Midway through the half Smith gave Andover the lead with a straightforward hit into the corner.
