HAMPSHIRE have boosted their squad by signing England under 19 bowler David Griffiths, and highly-rated batsman JJ McLean.

Fast bowler Griffiths, 19, has been handed a full contract after impressing for the second XI last season, while 24-year-old McLean has been rewarded with a similar deal after a three-week trial at the end of last season.

Shanklin-based Griffiths has been with Hampshire since the age of 11 and will tour Malaysia and India in the New Year with a 14-man England under 19 squad including fellow Academy product Mitchell Stokes.

South Africa-born McLean has played six first class matches for Western Province, for whom he made his debut in 2001, but qualifies to play for Hampshire as a non-overseas player because he has a British passport.

Last season, he scored two hundreds in six games for the second XI and persuaded Hampshire that he was worth a contract with 266 runs at 88.66 in three championship matches, when he was not bludgeoning Sussex County League attacks as Hastings and St Leonard's Priory CC's overseas player.

McLean, who has a first class average of 20.25, was captain of South Africa's National Academy side last year and has also coached at Western Province's Academy.

Griffiths and McLean take the number of post-summer Hampshire signings to six after joining the likes of Sean Ervine, Kevin Pietersen, Richard Logan and Simon Katich.

Director of cricket Tim Tremlett said: "David and JJ both showed that they can be an important and exciting part of our future in their performances for the second XI last season.

"JJ was recommended by a number of people, including his agent, and Neil Johnson, our former overseas player."
