JIM Dixon hopes his 'Stoke side have gained a significant boost mentally now they've secured their opening league win of the season.

Dixon has been rallying his troops after their seven successive defeats, telling them they are a good side and can compete in London one, but he knows a win was the best way of getting them to believe it.

And the Kiwi immediately noticed the positive impact last weekend's 28-5 success over Thanet had on the players.

He said: "There was a real buzz among the boys in the dressing room. We all felt like we could play again on Monday! The bumps and bruises don't feel so bad after a win.

"I was really happy for the guys because they proved to themselves and other people that they are capable of playing good rugby.

"Now they have to show they can handle the pressure to continue performing.

"They haven't got any excuses any more and there's no reason why this cannot be a building block."

New signing Sebastian Berti received the man-of-the-match accolade after a starring role against Thanet - the fly-half contributing eight points with his boot.

Dixon said: "Seb definitely made an impact that's for sure. Considering he only trained with the team once and had only met the guys once, he played very well against Thanet.

"We made sure his four conversions were easy and right under the posts, but his all- round game was impressive.

"His performances will improve once he gets settled. He's getting on well with the guys, and that's always easier once you've proved yourself on the pitch.

"People will welcome you fairly quickly then. He's found himself a job and is happy with his home in Oakley, so we're pleased."

In another plus for his back-line, 'Stoke finally secured Ian Calder's registration from Bracknell on Tuesday. The wrangling process to get it from the national two outfit stopped Calder playing against Thanet.

Dixon said: "We've said all along Ian is a good player and he's proved he wants to be here as just a player.

"Of course, he has to justify his selection like every other player, but there's no question he will contribute positively to the side."

Dixon said he is close to bringing a new prop to Down Grange, after a series of successful talks.

At the moment, Steve Hobden is still coming out of retirement on the odd occasion to help out when Dixon is struggling with his front row.

Dixon said: "I'm hopeful we'll have come to an agreement with the new prop by next week.

"Stan is always happy to help out and the guys like having him around. He's always welcome, but we need to have someone for the long-term."
